Would a D60 be a good starter DSLR camera to start on? I'm sure it will be a vast improvement on my wife's Nikon L16 point and shoot. I'm looking mainly to be shooting wildlife(such as squirrels, owls, hummingbirds, and any other wildlife I see). I will at some point in the future buy a D5100. I probably will experiment shooting other things that might interest me as well(that 2011 thread is awesome).

I had a D60 (my first camera actually), I've since upgraded to a D700.

The D60 is a good camera, but these current cameras like the D3100 and the D5100 are much better. It mainly comes down to cost, if you can get a D60 for a song (they should be pretty cheap right now), go for it, but if its just a few bucks more, get the D5100.

If you shooting wildlife, you will want the 70-300mm lens (the 55-200mm will do, but the 70-300 will be better), and the next lens you should consider getting after that would be the 35mm F1.8 (its not good for wildlife, but it will let you use your camera in alot darker places).

Yeah I have been using a D40 for a while now and while I want to upgrade to a D5000 or D90 eventually this has been working quite well for now.

But like Cold_b said I would not spend a lot on a D60, if you have to spend over $200-250 on it than it probably would be worth putting aside the money for a bit longer and waiting until you could afford a D5000 or 5100 which will last you longer.

I agree with everyone a D3100 or D5100 would be a better investment...
