Hi,

I don't really know too much about hardware, I know more than average Joe, but nothing compared to what you guys know.

What I would like to know is what spec of machine should I be looking at for doing video editing.

I imagine I'd need a load of RAM and a decent graphics card, as well as a big HD.

The problem is I don't know which mobo manufacturers are good, which manufacturers RAM I should buy etc...


Any help you can give me would be greatly appreciated.

well if you're doing 3d editing type work you'd want a nice workstation card like a qudaro or fireGL, but if it's just 2d video you could get away with something far less expensive.

for vdeo editing i'd recommend a dual system over a single system, and over a hyperthreaded single proc system.

Still need more details, do you want to go amd, intel? what type of budget are you looking at?

I'm not really too fussed about going AMD or Intel tbh, would like some opinions on each if that's ok.

Budget is about £1200-£1500 (around $2000-$2300)

Well for that price range, i would suggest a P4 3.0Ghz, a gig and a half of ram, and a Geforce6800NU, you would have a solid video editing system with this

same stuff but i believe intel is better for editing, but u really won't see the difference plus a64 is probably cheaper. what u should really get is an apple, mostly all videoeditors use them as their main rig.
 
As much as I hate to admit it, I agree with apple being the best for multimedia.

Going with a xeon or an a64 is a pretty rough choice, I went the a64 route with socket 939(I recommed an opteron board and proc) just so that later i could upgrade from my dual to a quad using the dual core cpu's they have planned. I do some 3d editing and also alot of video encoding in my spare time though.
 
Other questions - will you be doing more than video editing on the system? any other applications, programs, or games you want to be able to deal with? How long does the system need to last? Are you interested in building your own, or buying something prebuilt with warranty and support?
