Newbie question: AMD vs. Intel

Really, you dont even need the search function, theres multiple threads in general hardware, strictly Intel, and strictly AMD forums.. all withing a page or two of browsing. Not to mention if you use google, there will be multiple results from articles and other forums.

Honestly, it depends on what type of applications you'll be using your system for.

AFAIK, at this time the P4 Northwoods offer better performance in content creation (such as encoding) due to the software being optimized for SSE2 instructions while the Athlon XP's and 64's offer better performance in FPU-intensive applications such as gaming.

PrescHOT? Well, I wouldn't touch one until the LGA-775 socket type Prescott's come out, hopefully addressing the heat issue somewhat. Also, it's been shown that when Prescott P4's and Northwood P4's are put head to head under 3.6 GHz, the Northwood's are slightly more efficient in their processing.

With DDR-2, Socket 775, Socket 939 and PCI Express on the way, with new chipsets and a new form factor coming down the pipe, from my perspective it doesn't make sense to purchase a new system quite yet, since you would be buying into technology that can't be upgraded at a later date. :(

What would I do? If you need a system now, go Athlon 64 socket 754. At least you can upgrade the CPU to the A64 3700+ that's to be released later on (and will be the fastest speed grade of A64 on Socket 754 according to roadmaps). If you can wait... I'd hold out until Socket 939 and PCI Express make's its' way to the mainstream... and grab a new system based on the S939 Athlon 64.

Just my $0.02 CDN. :)

Since I am a gamer I would go with the A64 3400+ but it all comes down to what you do. If you do a lot of pro work then you may opt for a P4 since a lot of pro. programs are optimized to run better on a P4.

Oh man lets not start another one of these :p.

If your primary usage of the PC is gaming then the Athlon 64 is your best option.

If your into alot of application work like 3ds max or Photoshop and programs of that such that are multi threaded, or if your into encodeing and heavy multitasking then the Pentium 4 is your best option.

If your an overclocker then the Pentium 4 is your best option for a high performance chip and the Athlon XP 2500-M would be the best for a little less powerful and cheaper chip.

For the best overall chip i would get the Pentium 4 Northwood. Its a great gaming and application mixture of a processor with lots of headroom for overclocking and more stable chipsets.

Personally i'd wait. Things are going to change big here in the next few months. And from the news it might not include AMD as much since their new socket 939 processors are looking not to come out in full supply till third quarter which is nearing the release of AMD's 90 nano chips so i wouldn't bother buying one of the socket 939 130 nano chips in third quarter ither for the fact that the 90 nano chips will be cheaper and more overclockable.

Prescott is getting geared up for an updated release which should fix alot of the heat issues and also the Grantsdale boards will be much better suited for Prescott. PCI Express and DDR2 will be out this year also.
