Newbie Problem in Doom3

I know this has prolly been, covered, if it has, please send me the link to the thread. I have a Radeon 9700 Pro stock. When I play Doom3, I can get to the main menu fine, but when I start a new game, I"ll get the intro movie, then when that is done the screen goes blank, and VPU recover goes on saying my card has crashed. THe same thing happens when I try to go into any of the menus from the main menu. What the heck is going on? My card works perfect on other games, just not Doom 3.

Athlon XP 1800+
Radeon 9700 Pro with the Catalyst 4.9 beta and DirectX 9.0c
512mb Pc2100 DDR
WinXP Pro

That should tell what I'm working with, anyone else get this problem or no a solution?
 
Other threads here say to turn off VPU recovery and see if that works. I would also make sure your card/system has plenty of cooling.
 
Cooling is critical.... DOOM will find your weakness. Turn down your clock speeds and turn OFF VPU recover.
 
i had almost that same problem with my setup, go under your c:/ati folder and find smartgart.exe and turn off agp read and write, that cleared up the problem with me with no noticable performance hits in other games.
 
I turned off fast write, and vpu recover, same thing. Main menu, if I go to system to change my settings, controls, or anything other than the main menu, the game crashes, and so does my computer. HOw would the video card overheat in those few seconds it takes to load up doom3? I dunno what is going on, about to either throw it out the window, or reformat. Any other suggestions?
 
My buddy plays D3 on his 9700 Pro just fine - I suppose there could be flaw in your card that hasn't been uncovered until D3, but before we go down that road, perhaps try a few different drivers - I believe my friend used the beta 4.9s with success. Other than a driver reinstall, I guess give a reformat a go before you chuck the card out the 2nd story window
 
In FSB research, I turned off AGP read/write in Smartgart once. Was able to have 3D stability to over 250Mhz....instead of 245Mhz.... but 3D2K1 dropped from 21K+ to 9K.

Not advisable. Not the solution. Cool the video card correctly is the solution.

odd, i never noticed a performance drop the likes of that but im not doubting your word, so am i correct in saying it's a heat issue and if i turn agp writes back on after i add additional cooling to my card it shouldnt crash anymore?
 
I underclocked my card, could get menus but no gameplay. Tried timedemo too and same issue. WHat program should i get to monitor my vid card temp?

I got speedfan, and its tough to see what my vid card temp is. Might me 47 degrees celsius.
