I'm a student who have played with VirtualBox and Virtual PC before and thought to try out ESXi. Since I can't afford even a 2nd hand server specs hardware at the moment, I thought to try out on my personal PC.

The specs:
Asus M4A78-EM
4x2GB Kingston DDR2 800
2x2TB HDD

I've managed to download and burned a copy of ESX 4.0 and 4.1, and managed to get them to work in virtual environment, but was not able to install them bare metal. There is an error screen that keeps popping up that says something about Traceback failed and a long series of words. I'll try to get the screenshot later if I can.

I realised that I sounds like a complete noob at this point, but that's basically what I am now. I would appreciate any kind of help or pointers to aid me to resolve this issue. Thanks in advance
 
Your board seems decent - can get up to 16GB of memory which is important.

The Network Interface Card and the Storage Controller you use
play a big part in having an easy install and working ESXi server.

Assuming your motherbaord has Realtek NIC and some non hardware
raid controller, I'd get an add-in Intel Gigabit NIC and try booting ESXi off USB and
use an external storage solution (Openfiler/Freenas/Starwind) on a second box.

But .. you'd have to post up exactly what your specs are to get any real help.

Thanks for the advice. My rig full detail are as follows:
Athlon64 X2 5200+
Asus M4A78-EM
4x2GB Kingston DDR2800
2x2TB HDD
Samsung DVD writer

As for the built in NIC, its a Realtek RTL8168B/8111B.

I'm not intending to run any form of raid at the moment. One of the HDD is my working drive; the other is a spare which I intend to install ESXi for trying out 1st.

So you think that I should get an Intel Gigabit NIC? Will try it out later in the week (Once I got the money!), but is it an absolute to be running in raid for installation?

As for creating the USB boot drive, I've downloaded the instruction, but can't figured out the commands it meant for creating the boot drive.
 
When I said "specs", I should have been more clear ... like
what onboard NIC and storage controller model/version, etc.

It seems a NIC driver is available for your board under ESXi.
I do not / have not bothered with adding driver packages, so
I can't help you there.

Your SATA controller looks to be useable too.
