Okay I just got a New Mobo (read sig below) and among other things it has onboard gigbyte lan. now I know the audio is a codec and uses up some clock cycles but what about the lan? they advertise it as a chip but I wanna know if that means is uses no cpu (or no more than a pci adapter would) or if it runs sorta like a codec. The reason i ask is i have usb and pci NID's around and will use them if it will give me a performance boost.

On a last note about what percentage of my A64 3000+ will the audio use (and the lan too if it does)

I would say use the gigabit lan, thats all the performance you need. It will probably use 2% to none of your CPU power. Its definitely faster than most PCI network cards you'll have laying around and since its on an onboard chip, i think it would be a bit faster than having it ran with a PCI clock rate. As for the onboard audio, I cant tell you an exact percentage but you won't really notice a slowdown comparing to if you had a pci audio card.

Does this help?

Your gigabit port will only run at gigabit if it is connected to a gigabit network. As for the CPU usage... Like said by Darkstar559 above, it is minimal.

yeah it does but i dont think the gigabyte lan will give me any performance since im on a college campus and the infrastructure is still 10 base :(

PS what does everyone think of my system?

Well I like the memory and the vid card. I am personally waiting out the 64 bit processing for a little while longer though. Have you received any of it yet? I was kinda wondering about the PSU. Is it quiet? Everything else looks good as well. I'm not too keen on the acrylic cases though. Just a personal opinion. Others like them, I say "eh... whatever" I hope you enjoy it though.

dont know how quiet it is I have everything but the mobo and CPU but the rest of my case is so loud i cant tell (5 case fans)
