So the thing is running, in windows well not too shabby. Yes i will add other clients to take advantage of the multiple cores. Unfortunately i won´t be able to run FAH 24/7, my question is how should i close the application? well i don´t want to just close it to shutdown and loose all the progress.
 
Are you running the single client or the SMP?

Both will back up the progress, SMP can be funny about shutting down if you are running more than 1.

Most of the problems that exist with the SMP client are from shutting down and lost WU.

The single client does not have this problem..... however if you have a duel or quad, even if you run a client for each core you will not get the most out of the boxen, points and amount of work done)

If your running the single, just shut it down...... I however have forgotten where the off switch is.... and that my boxen even had one ;)

So if I understand you correctly, your saying that you can stop the F@H client?:confused:

I have never heard of such silliness.... why, oh why on earth would one wish to do such a thing?

Nah.... seriously, just shut er down, and fire it back up when your ready. At the most, you'll loose a few minutes of work. I believe by default it backs up every fifteen minutes, so you should be fine:)

 
Yeah, you've got to be careful about what client your runnin'. I think SMP folding is more designed for people that have dedicated 24 hour boxen (24/7, the SMP WU's have a short turn around time) or for people that at least fold most of the 24/7 hours in a day and never shut their boxen down except for maintenance (like me :p)

You said in your post you wouldn't be able to fold 24/7 so running 1x client (Edit/begin) per 2x cores in SMP. (Sorry, I goofed, there goes my walkin' on water credits) :rolleyes:(Edit/end)

It's my understanding that only the SMP VM client and the diskless client loose folding work progress under normal circumstances. (Edit/begin) When I say normal circumstances I mean the chip has a folding stable overclock.(Edit/end)


 
Keep in mind he said he could not run this 24/7 thus a client or two is probably best

well gaming is another issue, but do games really use all the four cores at its fullest? nah. so i might be able to at least leave 1 client running, depending on the game

Hey leSLIe, that's a good point. Can 2x cores be dedicated for games and the other 2x cores for folding?

 
You can under Linux, just assign the 'back end' cores to folding. I do that occasionally... of course, my game choice is somewhat limited :p

 
FAH is set to the lowest priority. So when the Game request CPU cycles it gets in line before FAH.

I run 2x SMP clients on my main rig and can't notice a difference.

2X single clients you wont even notice.

(just make sure you have a decent amount of ram)

True, but the SMP clients seem to be a little more stubborn about giving up those cycles. It could all be in my mind though, like the voices.

If they are in VM I think this is true.....

I however have had no problem with: HL2, Supreme Commander, Crysis, ET:QW, and a few others.... but that is just me.

 
I am running 2 SMP clients in VM (Q6600) and I dont have any problems in game:D

seriously, how could you game while running all that?

Crysis, SupCom, CoH etc. :D

F@H has lowest priority so my games get all CPU power they want and I have enough RAM to keep all my programs happy:) (8GB RAM is perfect for vista - games/programs which were loading for 30+ seconds in XP are loaded in Vista in 2-3 seconds).

I don't have a Intel C2D quad core cpu, but I'm not a newbie to folding on an Intel C2D dual core cpu. I know for a fact the Affinity program works on a Intel C2D dual core cpu in WinXP /w SP2 and I don't know if it'll work for a Intel C2D quad core cpu either in WinSMP or LinSMP. I was under the impression Affinity program assigned core priority for a multi core cpu. :confused:

I just know from folding 24/7 in both WinXP and Linux that with several Intel dual core Exxxx chips (E6300, E6400, E6420, E6600) I've had absolutely no problems loosing folding work or gaming problems. (these C2D dual cores are mildly overclocked to a folding stable OC') I'm not really an avid gamer, but I hada' try it :D

Like I said, I've only heard of loosing folding work in VM or diskless folding due to shut down problems and I don't ATM have a Intel C2D quad core cpu. (hopefully soon to be rectified, I've seen on fleabay a couple of Intel C2D quad core cpu's, with G0 stepping, go new in the box (retail) for as little as $170 or $180 bucks :eek:)

That easy.
I use SMP Seesaw Pro to set affinities go the game is the only thing running on one or two cores.
Everything else runs on the remaining cores.

I don't have a quad so I guess I'm a newbie at folding on one, but I'm not a newbie to folding. I know for a fact the Affinity program works on a dual in WinXP /x SP2 and I don't know how it'll work for a quad cpu in either OS. I don't have a quad core cpu yet (Q6600 or a Q9450).I was under the impression AC assigned core priority. :confused:
Affinity Changer works on Intel duals and quads. It should work on AMD quads and I have confirmed it works on AMD dual dual-cores (4 cores). I have a dual Opteron 280 system and it increased performance with no other programs running about 200PPD with 2 clients. So, it's more versatile than many have given it credit for. IMO, whoever wrote AC should be rewarded.
