Newb question -- SMP or multi-client?

I've been folding with team 33 for a few years, but got a new computer recently (i7-920) and was wondering about a multi-core folding client. I get that I can install four separate single-core clients or one SMP client, but I can't seem to find anywhere in the FAQs which would be better.

It's probably a dumb question, but can someone help me out? Thanks!

SMP, it isn't even a question.

Follow the guide in the sticky section and you will be set. I think you will be shocked by the ppd that thing can crank.

Congrats on the new rig! Fold on!

Thanks a lot for the quick reply. Getting on it!

OK, but first, another even dumber question ... can I use a GPU client and an SMP client at the same time? I have a 5850.

Yes you can. However, the ATI client will hurt you ppd with the SMP client, not give you a huge amount of ppd, and suck up a bunch of power.

I'd say skip it, at least for now. OC your CPU and you will get WAY more ppd that way.

I configured it following Stanford's guide, then saw the guide here. If I include the -smp switch in the client config, I don't need to include it in the shortcut's target window, right? Is there any way to ensure that I'm using the correct (SMP) version of the client (iiuc, it defaults to non-smp behavior if it's not configured right)?

Just follow the guide that I linked. It is much easier than Stanford's guide and gets you set up to max your ppd.

Correct.

If you download an A3 core, you have the correct client. If it loads all 4 cores on your processor, you have it set up correctly.

just in case you didnt relize. task manager will look like it has 8 cores. 4 real 4 hyperthreaded. all 8 should be loaded.

@lehmann: Yeah, I knew that already. I'm not a TOTAL newb, just a folding newb. But I appreciate the mention, just in case :)

OK, I've been folding with a single-core client for like a year and had a grand total of 32000 points. The SMP monitor on my i7 tells me I'm looking at better than 10000 a DAY. Good gravy!

So I got all excited and put the SMP client on the Opteron in the kitchen, too. Whee!!

Have you considered doing some overclocking? You will need a very good air cooler when overclocking these Bloomfields, but it does make a good difference. Those 920's supposedly overclock very well.

Told ya you would like the ppd ;)

Looks like another one is hooked and is being brought onto the boat. Welcome to the addiction.
