I've never said you should undersize your ZIL. Again, the limit you are referring to is the minimum - my point was to be safe and round up to the max unless you have a very unusual configuration - the price will not be that significant and you won't need to worry about it.
 
Is 300GB ZIL really that much of a waste? Larger SSDs usually have better performance specs, which is good. And while all the space won't be used directly, it'll all be used for wear leveling making it just take longer to be worn out. Oh yeah also for partitioning, without trim doesn't partitioning make it easier SSD to wear level? Eg partition out 20GB out of the 300GB for ZIL, and don't use the rest.

Yes, the unpartitioned space will be used for wear leveling which is why people should stop claiming that SLC is unquestionably better for ZIL than MLC. The most important is getting the speed required by your workload and performance demands, and the second most is writes/$.

For reaching both of these requirements, newer MLC drives will probably be your best bet. Last I checked the 20GB Intel SSD 311 (SLC) cost about the same as a 120GB Intel SSD 320 (MLC). Partition the 320 with 20GB for the ZIL and you'll have an extra 100GB of NAND for wear leveling, which should give your similar if not better endurance than the 311.
 
to the question, "is it a waste?" yes if it is not needed. a zil is not magic and may infact slow down your system or be not used at all. so, given this is just a shared CIFS storage server (see OP which iirc does not use the zil) and large 4GB file copies (which bypass the zil) it would be best to run some zil tools to verify it will add value before decinding on buying one.

I highly suspect you do not need a zil.
