New SATA drive problems

I ordered an OEM 74 gig raptor and i'm having difficulties installing windows on it. I have an XP Pro disk from my university and when I boot to it the SATA drive doesn't show up. I can see my PATA drive but not the new one. I've formatted it using my mobo's onboard RAID controller and have even set up the partition in windows, but I'm still having no luck. It seems to me I shouldn't even have to do all that, right? I mean, what if I didn't have the other HDD? Shouldn't I just be able to install the drive, pop in my windows disk and install? I've even tried hitting F6 to set up a third party RAID controller, but nothing gets detected. I don't have a floppy drive, although as I said the drive is OEM so I don't have the drivers on disk anyway (and western digital's website sure doesn't have them), but again, it's a hard drive. One would think I could just throw it in and install. Anyway if anyone could offer any suggestions I'd appreciate it. I'd like to set the drive up on its own and not use the other one to do it because I don't want to be dependent on it (I want to use the old one as a data drive and not have windows on it), but at this point I'll take what I can get.

its your onboard sata/raid controller thats not detected. thats what the f6 drivers are for. you have to have those drivers on a floppy, it wont detect unknown devices then prompt for drivers. you have to know what the drivers are and provide them.
 
How do you have the SATA configured in the BIOS. If you have it set to RAID (which you shouldn't, because you have a single drive), then you would need to hit F6 and have a floppy drive to load the drivers.

Since you seem to only have a single SATA drive, you need to read in the motherboard manual how to set the SATA Mode based on your desired configuration. Anything besides RAID Mode, and you don't need any extra drivers. I have 3 computers that all use a single SATA drive as the boot drive, and I don't have a floppy in any of those machines. The XP install sees the SATA drives as regular IDE drives, and the install program continues as normal. Read your manual, and you'll have it solved.
 
Ummm...well I've parused the BIOS and don't really see any SATA settings... I have an asus a7n8x-e deluxe motherboard. anyone familiar?
 
asus's site for that motherboard says that the sata RAID is handled by a
Silicon Image Sil 3112A RAID Controller

which although it is "onboard" its effectively a pci raid controller card physically on the motherboard. You will need drivers to run it, it may not run in a non-raid mode correctly, etc. You will need a floppy with the drivers (or a slipstreamed OS install cd with the drivers inserted correctly on it).

you may want to get a pata/sata converter so you can hook your drive up to one of the pata channels. youd have to get teh right direction of converter, since there are 2 diff kinds.
 
What you need to do in the Bios is enable a SATA drive to BOOT option basiclly. Then you need your Raid Drivers on a Floppy(FLOPPY IS NOT DEAD YET!!!!!) I SAY LIVE LIVE!!. :)
