Can someone help me out with this? I'm stumped, and about to RMA something...
I'm building a new pc for a friend, and have run into a pretty big problem...
Specs:
Motherboard - A7N8X-X
CPU - AMD 2000+
Memory - Kingston Value PC3200 512MB
Graphics - Radeon 9700pro
Hard Drive - WD 80GB 8MB cache
Drives - Lite-on 52x32x52 and a standard floppy
Case - TS1 from PCClub.com w/ 300w generic PS.
Well, everything went fine at first. I've build several computers and never had any problems. This one was no different; installed windows, and booted up fine for eeh....4-5 times. I was updating windows with patches as normal (after installing the drivers that came with the motherboard), and then it just all of a sudden RESTARTED. Just blanked out. I was like....oooo k? So I went at it again, booted up fine, and proceeded to install SP1, restart, then some other critical patches. That's when it went shutdown again! Except this time, it wouldn't restart all the way.
At first, it was POST'ing ok, but it just wouldn't load windows. After a CMOS reset, and a "supposedly" (by the awflash prog) successful bios flash, it still wouldnt get to windows. Now, it won't even post! No beeps, nothing. Here's a few notes of things that happened, maybe someone recognized this...
- At first, the power switch would turn the computer off regardless of where I was...in windows...or wherever. Now, I have to unplug the PS to turn off the computer. I noticed this after it started to not boot to windows.
- I checked the graphics card and it was AMAZINGLY HOT. Even with a Giant II (thermaltake) cooler, it was hot. This was my old graphics card, and it NEVER got near this hot. Not scolding or anything, but it was pretty damn warm. I have no idea why it did this. (fan still working fine on the Giant II).
- I moved around the memory stick to different slots...still no good. However, when I put it in this one slot, it lets the monitor light turn green...if that means anything. The other two don't get a response from the monitor turning on at all.
- I took EVERTHING off, and even the motherboard out of the case (to make sure it isn't shorting) and ran it with just the memory, cpu, and graphics card. Still no good.
- I thought, maybe the PS crapped out...nope. I hooked my working Thermaltake 400w PS from this rig I'm typing on now, and still no POST.
- I took out the battery on the Mobo, for a good 20 min...still no good.
- I swapped the memory out with a good working one, nothing.
- I swapped the graphics card with an brand new x800 pro I'm using now, still nothing.
- I haved reseated the CPU and heatsink..nothing.
I've tried alot, as you can see. And I get nothing. I'm about to RMA the board back to Newegg, but just want to make sure I'm not overlooking something. Or if it's a possiblity that it's the CPU, that's the only thing I don't have a good spare to test with.
Can anyone help me out here? (sorry for the long post)
Thanks for the help, BTW.
