New overclock causes crashes

Here is my system specs.

3.4 Ghz P4 w/Zalman cpu cooler
Abit VT7 mobo
1 gb Kingston pc3200
ATI RADEON 9500
Thermaltake Armor case

Yesterday, I took your advices and overclocked to only about 3.6 through the system bios. Again keep in mind that this is my first time overclocking so please bear with me.

While listening to some music and multitasking, the system just crashed and rebooted. THis happened about three times? Whats going on? I thought that 3.6 would be a safe starting point. Please tell me if my system is able to handle the overclocking or what am I doing wrong. Thanks a million.
 
So you're running an FSB of approx 211Mhz. What are your temps?

If your temps are OK (approx 50 - 55c under load), have you tried giving the chip a little more voltage? Maybe something like 1.58 to start with. Generally don't go over 1.6 if you can help it.

Are you running a divider with your RAM? I have not had any experience with Kingston, but I gather it's pretty generic - maybe some more volts there (try 2.65/2.75). If that doesn't do the trick, maybe stick a divider on (5:4) or 333Mhz depending on BIOS.

thanks. I will try that. Do I give the RAM dividers and increase voltage using bios? Im not sure what my temps are. Is there a program or software that will help me monitor my case temps?
 
The VT7 is a VIA chipset and I doubt it's very good for overclocking. I don't know for sure.
 
who knows 3.6Ghz might not be an "easy" overclock for your CPU.

You need to read some threads on basic overclocking, b/c you're obviously lacking in knowledge.

here's super basic guide:

1. increase the voltage to 1.6v (safe but should give you more headroom)

2. change memory ratio to 5:4 to eliminate ram as instability cause

3. increase your FSB 5Mhz, (ex: 200 to 205)

4. boot in to windows, run sisoft memory & cpu, then Prime95 to test for stability. If it runs for 10 minutes, go back to step 3

5. if Prime95 won't run for 10 minutes go back down 1Mhz (fsb) at a time
and retest. Shoot for 30 minutes of stability.

6. if you get 30 minutes of stability with Prime95, then try tweaking your memory timings, and try using 1:1 ratio, too see what timings work best. Use sisoft to check memory bandwidth, and then test with 3dMark200_ to see how performance is affected and to check for 3d stability.
 
sorry fellas youre gonna have to bear with me. Again I am a novice. What exactly is agp/pci? I am definately lacking in knowledge.
 
AGP/PCI - essentially it's important that these are locked at 66/33 respectively. Generally, overclocking these busses will yield very little in the way of performance gains, and contribute greatly toward system instability.

You will find these setting within your BIOS

EDIT:

AGP - Where your Video card plugs in
PCI - Where things like soundcards/network cards plug in

Was trying to get hold of the manual so that I could guide you to the setting, but the site is VERY slow & I'm currently at work!
