New Machine, New ATI 4830, errors!

Vista Ultimate 64 service pack 1
4 gb of memory
gigabyte ga-ma78g-Ds3h(780g chipset)
160gb hd
Powercolor 4830 GPU
500w Antec Earthwatt PSU
9850 Amd Phenom Black Edition

Installed everything was working fine, first noticed in device manager GPU says (generic VGA adapter, code 10 can't start) installed drivers anyway from game.amd the 8.11 restarted, still no luck, CCC wasn't even coming up. Tried 8.10 drivers, still no luck.

Any thoughts?

*update - Installed Vista 32bit, looks like it's doing the same error, so it's not a 64 bit issue, will probably try XP next maybe, or I'm going to try and update the bios and see if it does anything, any chance that I just have a bad GPU!? Could also install it in another PC I guess and see what it does.

**Update 2 - Vista 32bit is working just fine, so will reinstall vista64 again and see what I can do, not really sure why I can't even tell it to install the driver I selected when tried to do it manually, well will keep messing with it.

***Update 3 - put Vista64 back on, still no go, and need help, can't seem to figure it out. Everything else is working fine, it's just the GPU drivers.

^ 3rd post down, so yes I fixed it. Thanks for your help though. Liking my new ATI card, so far I got 12k in 3dmark with my system OC'd, going to try for more when I get home today.

-I'm a computer tech at a local computer store where I live. My manager, also my roommate hates ATI. He owns the computer store and has for awhile now. He used to carry ATI, but because of all the driver issues that the customers were having he decided to only sell Nvidia. Because of the demand of the 4000 series we are finally selling ATI again, and I keep bugging him about it. I've had ATI cards in the past and never had an issue. So far so good, but of course my card had a little glitch and boy was he dancing just making fun of me. I will admit that the Nvidia drivers are better. Working there for 2 years now and we just honestly don't have driver issues with the Nvidia cards, simple as that. The only time when we did is the 8800 series and it had a problem with Vista, after playing for X amount of time the video driver would stop working. Was a very well known issue, and there was a work around, then SP1 came out and fixed it.

Go look at the Nvidia flavor subject on this forum, a lot less complaining about drivers, go to the ATI section, that's all it is. To say there is no issue at all, you really are a blind fanboy. My name is amdownzintel, but I tell customers who want a high end machine to go with Intel and there is really no reason to buy an AMD if you really want a gaming machine or a high end one, as long as money isn't the big issue. I personally really like AMD and ATI, but I admit their faults, not doing so you're just one of those annoying bastards that no one likes :) Please don't reply back with benchmarks, I look at them every day.

And now I am done with my rant, good day all. Also I love my ATI card, and my AMD quad machine, was 800 dollars for everything, that's why I go AMD, saves me money. Only real reason to go with AMD right now. I go with the underdog because in the end all I really care about is competition, keeps the prices low and keeps the tech race fun.
 
Uninstall the drivers, unplug your network cable, install drivers while not connected to the internet.

I've seen this issue a few times on different systems, but they were all running Vista. Sometimes during the install Vista tries to install it's drivers from Windows Update and things get really screwed up.

While that is hardly a valid test, the most popular thread in the nvidia flavor forum is "180.84 driver problem" :rolleyes:

But, I decided to do your test. In the nvidia section right now on the first pager there are 4 threads dealing with driver issues. In the ATI section there look to be 5 threads dealing with drivers (judging based on title alone - I didn't read any of them because I'm lazy).

So, based on that study we can easily deduce that neither ATI nor Nvidia have perfect drivers, both have their flaws, but neither is really worse than the other. Between me and my friends, the only one of us having issues is the guy with the nvidia card. Based on that I could say that nvidia has a 100% failure rate when it comes to drivers :p
 
sorry was just a trend that I was seeing on these forums, seeing how I check them daily. I like my ATI card, got 11k in 3dmark06 with the system and does everything that I want it to do. Just was letting people know that ATI does have driver errors, just seems like some users out there are blind to that. As I also noted we had Nvidia driver issues at our store as well, so yes neither are perfect. As being a tech here for 2 years though we just don't really deal with a lot of Nvidia driver issues. The issue I see a lot of though from Nvidia is fans die, GPU overheats and dies. I've seen it way too many times. It's usually always from EVGA too so who knows.

All in all, both are good company's both mess up. Just be aware of it is all.
 
I pulled my GTX 260 from my Xp SP3 box (32bit) and installed a 4830 without a hitch.
Not a single problem with the drivers or the card. It's a nice card for a great price.

I would chalk up 98% of these issues as user error. I have owned many from both sides over there years. My loyalty lies with whom ever provides me the most bang for the buck under <250.
A huge percentage of this consists of memory quality/settings, overclocks, mother board settings, power supply issues, and/or installation errors. Both sides have hardware failures, bugs, and etc I agree but are minimal in comparison.
Glad you were open enough to see through part of the BS that your manager tried feeding you.
Computers are assembled from many parts, and many people forget that. Nothing wrong with being new, but if I had a nickel for every thread that looked like this I could of quit my day job several years back:

I just built my computer and my [ATI][Nvidia] card is a POS! These Drivers are a POS! I can't even play a game for 10 minutes. I'm switching to [ATI][Nvidia] side. I'm never buying [ATI][Nvidia] card again and I never should have in the first place.

Here is my brand new system with all untested parts.
1) Intel Q6600 Overclocked (They used someones world record as a starting point).
2) Intel Board (Good choice but I'm sure it's not the lated bios or configured properly)
3) 4GB Memory (They were very detailed in all specs but this area. Probably picked up the cheapest they could find)
4) Western Digital Rapor (No problem with this, but they chose to spend extra funds in this area vs power supply or memory).
4) Some $180 Case.
5) 600 watt PSU (They were very detailed in all specs but this area. Probably picked up the cheapest they could find)

Most of these people will find the same issue buying the other brand. Point is give me any peice of hardware and I can make it run like crap. However many are quick to blame a manufacturer instead of questioning user error.
 
I would completely agree. I deal with customers daily who do really stupid things and the very first thing I now blame is usually the user. Seems that it always works out better that way.

If I was installing a 32bit OS there would have been no driver error as I stated before that I tried it out and worked flawlessly. It was just the 64bit that had a bit of a mix up.

I used to be a big hater against Dell, HP, etc... saying they are crap, but after buying a compaq laptop I think differently now. I just wanted a cheap laptop to where I can go online and other simple things. 600 bucks got me a dual core, 2 gigs of ram, 160gb HD, 15.4 in screen, couldn't ask for more. I love it and when you really think about it HP and CPQ use Asus boards. To me all a company really is now is basically a sticker. They use the same parts that everyone else is using, but it has there logo on it. To an extent though of course, we get a lot of Emachine desktops in here because they use a PSU called "best tech" and well they are really good at dying. For the most part though it really is all the same.

When it comes to my gaming computer though I always buy a 300 dollar GPU and I get whoever is winning at the time, don't really care if it's ATI or Nvidia.

For clarity, can you tell us what you did? I'm at a loss here to understand the issue. Your edited post still says you can't get the card working under Vista x64.
 
look back at my main post again, updated it. Basically 8.11 wouldn't go in didn't recognize my GPU at all, then tried a way earlier driver, still nothing, then tried 8.10 and it worked. I now want to put a few games on it just to see how it runs.
