New HSF advice

I have a 3.2Ghz P4 running off a Abit IC7, I also have the TT SLK-900 HSF (w/ AS) and my idle temps are like 55-58c.. Thinking that was high I first tried to reinstall the HSF, make sure it was on right, but nothing changed. I have a tornado blowing on this thing and even at high, sounding like a hairdryer, the temps don't change. Can anyone recommend a better HSF that might drop 5-10c off that?

thx

I'm using a Sycthe Ninja I see temps from 38-46C.

I'm using an Aerocool case which I think with three 120s really has good flow. Its gonna be a dust collector, but I'm happy so far.

I hope you mean SLK900U or 947U.

There's no way you should be getting 55C idle, especially with a Northwood. I'm convinced you don't have the heatsink installed properly or don't have your thermal compound applied correctly. A Vantec Tornado blowing down into the heatsink yet producing the same results means an improper installation to me.

Yeah, thats what I don't get :( the sink is a pain in the ass to install too, I followed the instructions to a T and all 4 screws are as tight as I can possibly tighten them without over doing it or stripping the heads. So that's why I figured to just ditch this and get a different one entirely... Or hell, try watercooling! But I know even less about what to get for that route :/

Thanks for the feedback

Watercooling is not the answer all the time.

Is the heatsink very hot to the touch? I'm starting to think your temperature sensor is borked.

The IC-7 boards has bad temp sensors always reporting temps about 10-15 degrees over. If you search you google you will find out for yourself

Wow I didn't even think of that being the problem, heh, sweet.. The pc's been on all day just finished playing q4 for a few hours.. the sink is barely warm, not hot at all.. I guess my ultimate question is how much room I have to overclock it, but since I can't get an accurate temp, that might be difficult unless I just base it on system stability.

thanks

System stability is the ultimate benchmark anyway. If your temps are too high, system stability will bear that out.

With your cooling, if the HSF is mounted correctly, and if you use some caution/common sense with vCore, you should be able to OC a little with relative safety. One thing you could do is slow down the tornado or use a different fan-if the sink is hotter, you can be reasonably sure that the connection is good and that the temp sensor just doesn't work that well. BTW, that's a very common issue-happens on lots of motherboards. I wonder why the manufacturers don't do a better job with that?
