Aye, soemthing definitely is awry with the pci/pcie locks. As sleepeeg3 mentioned, they still seem to be doing something, but theyre definitely wandering. There are holes where sata bugs out. For me, somewhere between 290 and 310 it disappears. Then it comes back again and goes out again after around 360. So you'd need a controller for your sata drives if you choose this board, like sleepeeg3 is doing. Also, the nic is toast at around 320fsb. I managed to have a semiworking connection at 320, but then upon auto aol im logon at startup, it only loaded half the buddy list and then somehow saved that back on the server, so now i'm down half my buddies that i'll never be in contact again with. oh well

It should be noted if you didn't catch it earlier, sleepeeg is running >400fsb. I managed to post up to 433 or so. I only had my sata hdd plugged in when I went 400+ once and it didn't detect. I can't say if theres a sweet fsb+pcie combo that will make it work again, since I haven't done any meddling. If I had a spare sata drive to do testing with, I would, but I already have too much data on this one to afford to lose.

I gotta say though that in my very rudimentary testing in the high fsbs didn't yield too great of results. I did 4:5 @ 320 and memtested my ram at 800ddr2 for 10 hours without errors. However, 1:1 @ 400 for the same effective 800ddr2 resulted in errors on occassion. Never really was bothered much to sort out the problem since it's not a useful frequency to me at the moment.

Still, getting 800$+ performance out of my E6400 at 353fsb is pretty nice.

Weird that your LAN went out, on my P5LD2-VM, I have seen no LAN issues yet at 353.

Just seems kind of silly to call a particular board a good OC'er for value when you need to buy 3 add-in cards to make that possible (SATA, LAN, and Sound).

haha yeah, seriously. had i done more research (well I guess I did but I was blindsighted by the fact that both boards were 945g and the p5l-mx was cheaper) i would have just gone with the p5ld2-vm. Did you say you lose sata after the 350's as well on that board?
 
the LAN issues is rather due to PCIE overclocking over 120Mhz and not to fsb .
Setting fsb@400 & PCIE to auto probably overclockes the last over 120Mhz.
IMO, for safety it is not recommended to set PCIE>120 which will result in no SATA detection or NIC dysfunction.
For me fsb@333 & PCIE@112 is a good compromise!

Aye. I just tried 266fsb and 110pcie to test and even then nic was beyond sporadic and unusable. SATA was also slow and laggy. I tried 320fsb and "90" pcie but no post. definitely wonky

All chipset voltages are at the lame Max, and CPU is at 1.43-something, CPU-Z shows 1.38 IIRC.

My DDR2 is native at 1.9V 675, so it's running fine on Auto settings PC-5300 at POST.

I run two Western Digital SATA-300s, and a Plextor 716 SATA DVD +/-RW. I don't think I have ever had a BSOD at these settings, and have been leaving my PC on pretty much 24-7 ever since I watercooled just to be sure.

Prime's over 10 hours, Ortho version, both cores, stable. If I drop PCIe by only 1, then no POST, 120 seems to be the cutoff point for me.

Edit for above should read "if I RAISE PCIe by 1"

when I was edging ever closer to 120 PCIe, I had only ever seen anyone else go as high as 116, so I was really nervous. :)

But...been stable, no internet weirdness, no LAN party glitches, no weird page loads, no email funny stuff, etc.

On the SATA side, no disk errors, no stalling, no XP glitches, etc. All my benchmarks look like they should (11,100 on 3dMark06), and the only game loads I have a problem with are things like BF2 (had install problems on my last rig running SATA DVD with BF2).

So, give it a shot, Orthos Prime overnight if it POSTs, and then see what you think. I would like to see 3.0 on my CPU, but...I'm pretty happy with performance at 2.82 (20.4 Prime1M).
 
christ, so the asus p5l-mx nuked my evga 7900gs i think. either that or the evga was defective from the start. also, when i put my ear next to the ram and that area of the motherboard, there's some nasty high pitched noises coming from there. i'm guessing it's probably a cap on the motherboard or something and not the ram. good grief. not really sure what my gameplan is now
 
What? You are getting no post now? Maybe you had mobo issues all along...

I backed my OC down to 350 and locked the PCI-E to 120 a few days ago, just to be safe.

I don't really know what to do at this point. I'm using onboard now since the 7900gs is completely toast in anything 3d. As soon as 3d mode is activated, it instant bsod's. There's a terrible squealing coming from the ram area. It's still orthos stable at 667 4-4-4-12-4 2.0v, so I'm assuming ram is kosher. Bootup has been slower than it used to be, even at stock everything. This is no good. I really don't want to be without a motherboard though. Might just get the higher end 945g and try my luck at that.

update: I've got the noise down to an art. Still can't tell exactly where, but it's quiet at idle. If I fire up orthos, it spools up. Stop orthos and it stops. Guess the board's going back. Airflow at least in the microfly is well designed. Under orthos, the ram gets over 50'c measured with the thermistor that comes with the microfly being jammed into the heatspreader. The heatspreaders are very very hot. Once the side and top panels are put on, it cools down to 41'c right away and the heatspreaders are cool to the touch.

I know a few of you own the P5ld2-vm's, p5l-mx, and p5ld2-vm se. I will update the thread if you guys post it up.
 
Sorry I've been really sour lately in this thread. I picked up the ultra FAR atx case to use in the meantime. Been using 945g integrated video now since the 7900gs refuses to go into 3d mode anymore. Going to rma that either through newegg or evga (already cut off upc and mailed in so not sure if it's still possible to go through newegg). I'm getting wavy video from the onboard video now too and it's really incredibly unstable, even at stock.

I figure the cpu is bound to be resilient to most anything so it's got to be good. RAM surprisingly still seems ok. Memtesting at 667 3-3-3-9-3 2.0v right now and it's almost through one pass. SMART monitoring for my wd re2 500gb drive is showing 100% performance but only around 50% fitness!!! God damn that faulty pcie!!!

I guess I'm going the ds3 route or something else atx. See you guys next year hopefully if board makers shape up

I had tons of issues with the DS3. I hated that board. Best I could hope for was for it to coldboot at 350 successfully. 390 was the highest I could get it, even with a Zalman northbridge cooler. Something was screwed up with the bios or maybe some of the board components, that was for sure.

hmm, in that case, I'll be sure to do more research. I know the asus p965 atx boards do perform nicely in terms of fsb scaling. Just trying to keep it cheaper since matx still seems like a decent project


update: just doing some final random testing on the p5l-mx. At least the ddr voltage is pretty accurate. Set to 2.0v in bios, measured 2.01v with DMM. The area is squealing pretty badly at this point, but orthos is still chugging for the time being. ram at 667 3-3-3-9 2.0v :)
 
My P5LD2-VM DH with 6300 will also go up to ~354 FSB with pci-e at 120. At 354 its very stable, with stock vcore.
Over 120 pci-e though, my sata is lost. Also i dont like to risk my videocard.
So... using an IDE hdd an the onboard graphics... but over 370 FSB the actual FSB just gets lower and lower :confused: also, the BIOS allows 400 FSB maximum.
Luckily, the newest SetFSB does support the PLL of the P5LD2-VM series!
Booting into windows at 350 FSB, pci-e at 150, and upping the FSB with SetFSB, and off we are!
Highest I was able to reach was 422 MHz FSB!

It was not stble though, sPI immediately gave an error (not exact in round).

Although very cool, 422 FSB on mATX, it's not really useable for every day; pci-e at 150 so no onboard sata or pci-e videocard, plus it's only possible by SetFSB.

Maybe some time I will try to get higher and/or stable by playing a little with voltages and frequencies.
 
Very cool man! Good to know where the SATA starts to go out, because that means these boards will also do 360. Still not great, but at least it is something.

Since I also had problems at 420fsb, that is very likely where the 945 chipset begins to fail. I assumed it was my CPU, because on the P5L-MX you can not raise the vcore, however at under 3GHz, you should still be fine. That tells me if there ever was a lock on the 945 chipset, 410-415 is the highest we can expect. I bet you would confirm this if you do play with the voltages.

That was one of the things that really bugged me about the F-I90HD board... A board will still post when it is a few MHz above it's maximum stable speed and act like your board and mine do, but every F-I90HD fails to even post at slightly below 370fsb. Something is fishy there...
 
My board does allow vCPU adjustments. I believe it was at 1.4 when testing, so it is likely the cpu is not the limit. Setting the FSB 1 step higher in SetFSB resulted in artifacts all over the screen, within a couple of seconds followed by a reboot. That does indeed make me think the chipset is the limit - I was using the IGP remember.
Maybe I can test with a PCI videocard, and IGP turned off.
 
hmm one thing I just remembered. these boards don't allow vgmch adjustments in bios right? Too bad I don't have another one of these boards or I'd try to figure out a pencil mod.
 
P5LD2VM DH allows adjustement of the vMCH up to 1.7 but no vFSB like the P5L MX!
The BSEL mod could be interesting with a e4300! ;)
