im looking to purchase a new esxi host as im currently running it on an old gaming machine.
2.66gz c2quad, 8gb ddr2.
i have shared storage running on an i3 with napp-it installed on openindiana.

i want to be able to run
1x2008r2
1xw7 64bit
1x xp
4-6 linux distros(nagios, lamp, phpbb, etc) 1gb ram each

so im looking for the best bang for my buck that can run the above vms without issue, if i fire all those up currently on the core2quad it seems really slow at times, would like the windows7 vm to be pretty snappy as thats where im working most of the time
 
If your lucky enough to be near a microcenter you can get a 3570K for $189 and $50 off a mobo (makes it around $60 for a ASRock mATX board that has a nic that works with ESXi) and you can get 16GB-32GB of DDR3 pretty cheap ($80-$200)

That would set you back around $450 if you loaded it up with 32GB ram.

The setup I went for on my home lab is:
i7 3770 $259
ASRock Z77 Pro4-M $109
32GB DDR3 Ram (4x8GB @ $50 ea) $200

$568 ($612 after tax).

It probably is overkill for a home lab, but it should last a while.
