A friend of mines laptop was constantly crashing so he asked for some assistance, he has an older HP Pavilion ZE5170 that came with a 40gb HDD. I diagnosed the issue as being HDD related as the constant crashing during and after windows installs coupled with the "click of death" were pretty good signs.

Here's my question, he went out and bought a 120gb HDD to replace the old 40gb one he had but I cannot for the life of me get windows installed on it, the drive works perfectly when hooked up to my desktop but the laptop will not run windows from it. I can get windows installed fine but it will not load it?

I threw an old 30gb HDD that I had laying around in and it loaded and runs windows perfectly. My thoughts are that it is a size related issue? What are your opinions/thoughts?

Perhaps see if you can find a BIOS update for the laptop, though I believe the limit is something like 136GB on older machines.

Edit: Another thing, is it set to cable select or masteR? I know cable select can cause problems on some machines.
