New HardOCP Thread

I use Mozilla on Linux.
Is this how it's supposed to look?

What's with the white bars?
That's not how it looks with FireFox under Windows. As a poster up above said, it seems to be a FF-Linux anomaly.

Thanks, we are aware, as is outlined by other threads here. The Flash headers will be completely removed soon.

I'd hate to be "that guy," but I really dislike some of the changes. I actually enjoyed having editions around, even though they didn't make much sense. They made it so easy to find what headlines I hadn't read yet if I had to stop for a while or if there were new headlines added. My biggest problem is the terrible scrolling performance of the page, likely due to the flash links at the top. It's really choppy in Opera now, and eats memory like crazy (I watch memory usage while I open / close hardocp.com and a few other pages for comparison). I do like some of the new appearance and layout aspects, but overall I'm disappointed.

Boy you're right there. I open Opera on the Google homepage I'm using 20 MB. Got to the [H] Forums and it goes to 25 MB. Go to the front page and it shoots to 58 MB.

I apologize but I'm not about to go through 9 pages of posts ... when will the Frontpage RSS be available again?

There was an anouncement on the front page yesterday that they were working on the RSS feed for the front page, and that they also got the RSS working for FireFox.

Did the Ads get bigger? Like everyone else I understand the need, but it's just too much.
Sorry,

Same here. I've been a huge fan of HardOCP since the latter part of the 90's. I've found excellent info here, and always look here first for reviews and comments on parts for PC's, and heavily appreciate everything [H] has presented over the years.

Maybe I just like things simple in nature, but to me it seems that my eyes have to do this juke-and-move everytime I come to the new page, to work my way around the flashing, animation, and overall 'overload' of a visual experience.

While I still appreciate the information, the presentation now has become pretty cumbersome.

I also don't like the idea of having to scroll down to see latest posts. Running 1280x1024 full-screen browser, you have to scroll down to actually view the latest posts. On other tech sites, its really nice to just be able to load the page, and see newest stories top and center, where everyone's eyes are drawn first.

Thanks for the efforts!

take this as you will since as they say you can't please all the people all the time. but i think the redesign is terrible.
1) 50% of the page is ads, and 90% of the ads are flashy whizbang types with lots of motion. viewing the home page is , now more than ever, like when bart was watching that japanimation show and started having seizures.

2) to make the ads worse, the placement is so deeply integrated into the rest of the site that it's not easy for your eyes to kind of naturally ignore the ads. the ads might be content and the content might be ads.

3) the tabs are kind of stupid. the only one that is clearly defined is console. the other three may as well be the same category with a different name. i'm sure you have a good idea of how they are different, but to me it just seems like you were trying really hard to make more sections and in the process broke something that didn't need fixing.

the one good thing the new design has going for it though is brand recognition. as soon as i looked at the front page i thought, "hey, i've seen this design somewhere before." and sure enough i had. my suggestion is to abuse your readers a little bit less or for the readers to use adblock a little bit more. either way . . . .

50% of the page is ads? Wow! Can you work that math on my bank account?

This is another "Wah! Why does Kyle actually want to get paid for all the hard work he does for us that we don't pay for?" post.

Honestly, I don't think the ad content is any worse than it was before... Seriously... Go look at a WayBack Machine version of the page from a month ago. The ads are flashier, but that's not Kyle's fault, but whoever designed the ad. If you don't like it, complain to the company who's ad it is, not Kyle.

Some people have no frickin' clue what it's like to run a website...

Thanks for your comments, they are noted. Don't let the door hit you in the ass. ;)

I'm finding the yellow headers for news items kind of distracting and getting lost with all the other new stuff on the page. I'm finding myself more and more just going directly to the forums and skipping the news.

Edit: Just looked at front page again. I think what's really missing is a daily break line. I read over some of the topics and then think "I read this yesterday" and realize that now there is no "Daily 5th edition" type break line to remind me to stop reading. Might be good for your stats on how long I'm on the front page, but annoying to me as a reader.

I love the new [H] :D

ONLY gripe is the square ad :p IMO it would be better as a banner spreading across th are where it is now :)
