Currently I have a WD800JB, Ive had the hard drive for years on end, however 80gb finally is not cutting it for me anymore, I'm looking to upgrade to a nice solid drive.

That is the current drive I am looking at. I am looking to not cross over $75 if possible. I'm hoping to get a drive that is faster and possibly more silent. Only problem is I only have Sata 150 which that drive is is 300, would there be a real performance difference in this? according to the reviews i need to make a boot CD and change the hard drive using that method. Seems a little strange but whatever.

Any ideas on maybe another drive or any comments?

You won't notice the difference between a SATA I and II drive. ;)

Slightly better ;)

The same Western Digital I have now the WD800JB i had to RMA 8 different times all drives dying. Why exactly do you recommend them over the other? I got really tired paying to RMA the drive every few months at MY expense because WD refused to help.

You may want to look at your PSU instead of the drives. ;) What PSU do you have?

Was using a Antec truepower 430w ages ago on a 1800+ athlon system. Was one of the best at the time. And im gonna get the seagate instead cuz Im not touching a WD again.

A little cheaper, but I'd definitely buy Seagate. My 320GB is very quiet.
Well, I have both WD3200KS and Seagate 320GB 7200.10s. I love both drives, but the WD is cheaper and I can attest to it being very quite. I have a number of WD500AAKS and they are whisper quite. The AAKS are very quite and I remember the 7200.10s having a problem with bad batches so some where very loud. I don't know if they are still having those problems now. So, I would go with the cheaper drive here, which is the WD3200AAKS.

The caps in those TP units are garbage. If you pop it open, I bet you'll find leaking caps, which would lead to out of spec ripple, causing your drives to fry.

No leaky caps :p Its in healthy shape, i tested it with multimeter and everything as well, its power was fine. WD drives just dont like me

If you look at all my systems, I have never had that kind of problem you do. Although, my TPII did have 2 busted caps, so Martin is out of commission until I can replace that PSU.

I have only had 1 bad WD drive, and that was bad from the manufacturer. It was a Raptor 150, 3 months after I got it. I had done a test on it and it failed. I had noticed some slow down with it, among other things (no clicking or anything like that).

I purchased the seagate drive, does that seagate have to require a .ISO to configure the drive to run in Sata 1.5 or whatever?

just plugg it in and youre ready to go

Thanks, the other seagate I origionally linked said you had to get a cd to turn it into 1.5 mode. Wanted to make sure so if i did I could get the cd burned ahead of time and not get there and be like damnit haha

did u check for ripple? by hooking it up an oscilloscope? ;)

This search is for you. Under $75, no WD drives included, sorted by price per gigabyte.

If you run into any problems with the search, please let me know - I wrote it. It takes a while to come up sometimes because it has to go check prices, but once it loads once it'll be fast for a while.

This is stressing me out. My Seagate came today finally, and yea. I got vista installed and everything but i kept hearing this loud "TICK" and "CLICK" It was pretty loud too. I tried to ignore it but i couldn't so now i am RMAing it. Me + hard drives = sad :(

Replace your power supply before you get any more drives. It can't hurt, and it might help.

This is a whole new PC not the same PSU that was with the WD's. And its a SFF Shuttle XPC. I cant replace PSU. Hard drives just hate me.

$5 cheaper and 2 years less warranty. I go for the Seagate.

Yes, because when a drive dies you get that data back.

I've only had 1 WD die on me, and that was a drive that faulty from the beginning (bad batch).

1. It's still nice to at least get something back after 3 years, even if it is just a new drive.
2. 70% of the time, the data is recoverable.
3. Seagate does have data recovery services.
4. There is only a $5 difference. The Seagate is also a bit faster.

When was the last time you got a quote from them? Most other places I know of charge somewhere around $500. Seagate also handles all types of media, so it's not a Seagate-specific benefit.

Eh, kind of a tossup, actually. Either drive is a decent improvement over the one he's currently got, though.

@ my guard unit we replace more hitachi, maxtor, and seagate drives than WD drives in that order
