hey guys, its my first post here!

but i was reccomended to ask you which grapchics card i should get (as i cant really choose)

my budget is around £250'ish but give or take a bit obviously

so is that around $400'ish dollars??? $350'ish?

im not sure but here are the ones i am looking at

http://www.scan.co.uk/Products/ProductInfo.asp?WebProductID=84181 < 256Mb Connect 3D Radeon 9800XT-VTD (D-Sub, DVI, TV-Out)

http://www.scan.co.uk/Products/ProductInfo.asp?WebProductID=132106 < 256Mb Celestica Radeon X800Pro (2200)

http://www.scan.co.uk/Products/ProductInfo.asp?WebProductID=129220 <256MB Abit ATI Radeon 9600XT DDR Retail

http://www.scan.co.uk/Products/ProductInfo.asp?WebProductID=90371 < 256Mb Gigabyte FX5950 ULTRA (D-Sub, DVI, ViVo)

thats bout it

but i am also open to suggestions :D

tell me which one i should get or if it is not in my list tell me which one you think i should get (within price range plz :))

Im gonna urge you to sway with the 5950 Ultra, i've heard good things about it, although i've also heard good things about th X800Pro.

The 5950 is also produced by gigabit, which is another reason i recommend it.

in the end the choice is up to you, but i would choose the 5950

personally i wouldnt get any... if i was forced to pick one i would pick the x800pro

the best card for your money is definitely the Geforce 6800 GT. I'd say the next best card is the x800 pro. And the next best is 9800 pro(for your money that is).

But as i said, 6800 GT. You can get it for $380-$420 depending on where you look. You actually can get it for even less, but you may have to wait a while, its only that cheap at backorder places. Good luck

The 5950  That thing is OLD yet they still cost ALOT. They're also having trouble with true DX9 games. RedFurry, that is some crappy advice. You should look into getting a 6800GT, and for the record, its about twice as fast as a 5950, if not more. And just another thing, there is no company names "gigabit" that makes videocards, you must mean "gigabyte."

Redfury, i dont mean to be mean but thats probably the worst card possible you could recommend him. It's way overpriced and its really.... just not good.

edit: im talking about the 5950

i have no real testing time with these cards so im not real sure how well they perform in comparison.

review sites are there for a reason...

personally i think you would have the best luck with a 6800gt

A 6800GT is about twice as fast a 9800 pro... just keep that in mind...

they are really expensive though :( the cheapest is around £300

plus there are loads

http://www.scan.co.uk/Products/Products.ASP?CatID=15&FilterCategories=288&Thumbnails=yes

and how fast is " 2ns " in MHz

2ns = 2 nanoseconds = 0.000000002seconds = 500Mhz (~ 1000Mhz DDR).

Have a look here:

http://www.pcwcomponentcentre.co.uk/icat/fa

You can get an XFX GT with a free copy of Doom3 for £300. If you look for the PNY card, you can get it for £270 I think.

Also look at the following sites:

www.overclockers.co.uk
www.ebuyer.co.uk
www.tekheads.co.uk

I'd agree with other recommendations that the best bang-for-buck card at the moment is the 6800GT - you probably won't believe quite how fast it is.
There will be very little between the performance of each individial manufacturer's cards, so just look at the software bundle that comes witgh the cards to make your decision. The leadtek cards have a better heatsink and fan which will be useful if you overclock, but almost all other's use the rference nvidia design which will be quite adequate).

how bout this one then

http://www.scan.co.uk/Products/ProductInfo.asp?WebProductID=130981

its the only one really in my price range, since i am actually building a new pc and still need some left for the other stuff!

The 6800 regular is significantly slower than the 6800GT - if you're going for one of them then look at the XFX 6800. overclockers.co.uk and ebuyer.co.uk are selling them for £150+VAT (~£176).

Still, I'd say that it's still worth getting a GT. If you can afford £265 for a 6800, can you afford £270 for a GT? Look at other retailers to find yourself the best deal.

yes but that is only for the 128's, would a 128 6800 gt still beat hands down a 256 something else???

Of course!

The amount of memory on the card is only the maximum size of textures that can fit in the card's memory. In most situations, for example, the 128Mb 6800 would beat the 256Mb 9600xt you listed by a factor of at least 4 times. The 9600 might have more memory, but the 6800 has much *faster* memory 9and so much higher memory bendwidth), as well as a 256bit memory interface (9600xt has 128bit), and 16 pixel pipelines to the 9600xt's 4. The 9600 series was ATIs mid-range card for the last generation. The 6800 series is the high-end nVidia card for the latest generation - huge difference in speed.

The 6800 standard has a 300Mhz core clock speed, 700Mhz memory speed (I think...!) - 128Mb - and 12 pixel pipelines.

The Asus 6800 gamers edition has a 350Mhz core speed, 1000Mhz memory speed (and uses the superior GDDR3) - 256Mb - but still has only 12 pixel pipelines.

The 6800GT has the 256Mb GDDR3, but has the full 16 pixel pipelines - you're effectively getting 'a third more card for your money'.

Look for some benchmarks on popular hardware sites (like hardocp, anandtech, tomshardware etc.) to get an idea of how each of the cards perform. Don't just pick the cheapest card with the most memory - that people will do this is the reason that 256Mb versions of the really slow cards even exist.

Still, 256Mb would be useful on a high end card, if you plan on running in high resolutions and using AA/AF (ie. large texture sizes). On a 9600xt it's a complete waste.

I am also in the market for a new card, I am thinking of the xfx gamers edition 6800, but for performance increase and future proofing I would ideally like the GT, but the £300 price tage is to steep, I have looked around the various etailers and can't find a GT for £250, anybody got any linkage. I know of the BFG 6800 GT OC at pcworld for £263 but they have no stock, does anybody know of any other UK BFG stockists.

cheers

There's only two cards to think about:

9800 pro $190

6800 $280

Either you get the first one for 190 dollars or the second one for 280, either way you won't get ripped off due to price vs performance.

9800xt is too expensive, x800 can't beat 6800's price, 9600xt???, and 5950 is a total rip off because it has no performance.

If you want to be ready for any game that uses 256MB of video ram (which doesn't seem it'll ever happen any time soon) and for a little more power get the 6800 GT.

If I were you I would just get the 6800 for 280.

X800 Pro VIVO if your gonna spend that much, you can flash it to an x800 xt pe
Its what i did, got my pro for 325 and flashed it to an xt
Not that 3dmarks matter, but i get 12,600 with it. Farcry in 1600x1200, doom 3 in 1600x1200. Great card.
