New Gen Graphics Poll.

I've seen dozens of threads about:

"Should I wait for R520?"

"Should I upgrade to 7800GTX?"

and so on. Each of these could have been a poll, so here's the chance for you to "vote".

I am pretty sure that I will go with ATI because I believe CrossFire is superior to SLI.

Wait untill the R520 comes out simply because I dont feel a need to upgrade right now and then I'll wait a bit longer till I can find a used one for sell for under $400.

my current card should last me for a bit, I don't think I'll upgrade this system anymore, the only way I'd get a new card is with a whole new system.

Ummmm don't we need some more info before we can answer this? Like the person's current system, games they play, monitor and financial situation? If this poll is meant to determine what each person would do based on their own personal situation it's kinda useless IMHO. But for what it's worth, in my situation I'd wait on r520.

I'm just gonna get a 7800GTX since nobody really knows for sure when the r520's gonna come out. Also, any card would be an huge upgrade for me since i'm still using a GF4 Ti4200 64mb.

personally i dont like the fact that all the 7800 is, is a higher clocked 6800 with some more pipelines

im waiting for real next gen, R520,
but also i might not get it if it turns out to be utter crap or not much faster then the 7800.. in that case ill get nvidia's real next gen card

Is there something on the 7800 that you are dissapointed about? I dont feel its lacking anything.

i assure you that the 7800 is quite a bit more than a higher clocked 6800 with more pipes

not only did they add those pipes which you mentioned, they did a host of gpu optimisations and 2 more vertex units - significantly increasing shader performance

go with the 7800gtx now, no point speculating and waiting for the r520, get the best now and be happy

i was going to buy a g 7800 gtx but last minute i didn't have the money. i saving money, waiting for the r520. is it going to be faster? wow if yes.
Big Fat Duck, the first time i heard about the gtx i thought the same thing. look at the specs of this monster, compare to specs of 6800 ultra and the x850 xt pe, it's quite amazing!

I chose to keep my existing card b/c features-wise, it's very similar to the 7800GTX in that SM3.0 is in there and 16 pixel pipelines seem adequate for my gaming needs ATM.

Also, even with my CPU OC'ed to 3.4ghz, I feel my CPU is the bottleneck that my Ultra-flashed 6800GT can't take full advantage of.

So, I plan to keep my 6800GT AGP card and buy a good transition board based on the ULI M1695 chipset that supports both an AGP and PCI-E x16 graphics slots. That way, I only have to upgrade 2 components--a Socket 939 based mobo and a Socket 939 based CPU.

When something powerful than the 7800GTX arrives in PCI-E format, I can always upgrade at my leisure while using the 6800GT AGP in the meanwhile.

same here... i'm happy with my 6800GT, I know that because I have socket A and AGP, I'm gonna have to make a full system build the next time I wish to catch up with technology. I'm not ready for that yet though, I can wait 1-2 years.

Optimummind, careful what agp/pcie motherboard you buy!!! some boards let you put in an agp card but it won't work at full agp speed (works like 2x agp). and agp features don't work too. i bought an ecs motherboard thinking the same thing you are thinking, and i got scrued.

True, but then again there were almost a dozen or so posts from various asking what they should do? Wait, etc...

Yeah and for all that higher clock speed and additional piplines, I'm really disappointed with:

1. Single socket heatsink/fan. Heh! I want one that takes up three spots of space as that's progress.

2. Reduced temperature. Why is the trend for the 7800 less heat? It should be double the requirements of an SLI rig per card. At this rate you could SLI two and have the same heat as a single 6800 Ultra. I was looking the the cost benefits of disconnecting my furnace in the Winter and the barbe for Summer grill'n. Steak looks awsome with the pins of the existing 6800 Ultra heatsink/fan seared into it.

3. Improved SM3.0 shader model performance. I pissed that HDR performance has rocketed much higher than can be explained by simply more vertex and pipeline units. Why the heck do I want that new Shadows and HDR rendering in games on a single card at a better performance than compared to a an SLI ultra setup?

Yep all those improvements just are explained by some extra transistors and clock speed increases Damn refresh, why couldn't there have been some additional features beyond some addition pipelines and vertex shaders

I still stick with waiting for R520 as most of us have gt/Ultras right now anyways, and the benefit of going 7800 is not there yet with most games.

If you want the latest and greatest now, then obviously 7800GTX is where its at.

However, if you don't mind waiting a few months, R520 could be better - and if it is, Nvidia might release a 7800U.

Then again, no matter how long you wait there is always something better on the horizon, and some people might not want to wait a few months for ATI's card that might not be any better than the 7800GTX.

Bottom line, no matter how good the R520 is, the 7800GTX will serve as a fantastic "next-gen" card. Still, I voted to wait for R520 and see the performance there, unless you are using a 9800/FX5900 or earlier card, in which case I'd say to get the 7800GTX now.

if you "just wait" for the next card to come out then you will never buy a new card. espcially if you wait for the R520.

I am going to wait for the R520, by the time it comes out my X850XT-PE will just about be 1% no good anymore!

I am waiting for the next generation after this one.
