Hey everyone, I've been getting the itch to make a new rig after the tax refund. I'll tell you my current rig and I'd like to hear from the pros if now is a good time to upgrade or if I should wait. My system still feels pretty great so I'm on the fence about ridding this one till death or upgrading and either selling the old one or just using as a spare.

Current specs:

Operating System
Windows 10 Pro 64-bit
CPU
Intel Core i5 4670K @ 3.40GHz
Haswell 22nm Technology
RAM
16.0GB Dual-Channel DDR3 @ 799MHz (9-9-9-24)
Motherboard
ASUSTeK COMPUTER INC. Z87-A (SOCKET 1150)
Graphics
4095MB NVIDIA GeForce GTX 970 (EVGA)
Storage
465GB Samsung SSD 850 EVO 500GB (SSD)

ASUS DRW-24B1ST

I also have the HTC Vive so that might be something to consider.

5) If reusing any parts, what parts will you be reusing? Please be especially specific about the power supply. List make and model.

10) Do you already have a legit and reusable/transferable OS key/license? If yes, what OS? Is it 32bit or 64bit?
64 Bit Win 10

I'd delid that Haswell put it under an AIO , crank up the megahurts and ride it until it died.

Your video card is where I would focus.

So you are thinking I keep mostly every the same but just OC the CPU and pick up a 1080?

Nailed it in one.

The kid games on a Haswell 4690K at 4.8 with an H100i for cooling, while there are faster processors out there, the gain is so small it's not worth spit. His game choices are first person shooters mostly, Skyrim mods etc.

The only thing he asked for that the old platform didn't have was USB-C and I got there with an add in card and front panel header. There fixed. And not everyone cares or needs USB C connections. His board has M.2 and SATA Express and all that stuff, but he won't spend money on anything but his monitor and video card , which I find wise in a gaming machine like this.

I actually have a H100i on now, and just haven't OC'd since I wanted to get a few years of normal use outta the CPU for boosting it. But yeah maybe I'll look into that.

Anyone else have any input on this?

Get a gtx 1080 and sell the gtx 970 to get some of your money back.
If you were doing other things other than gaming i would've suggested to switch your cpu to 4790K while keeping the rest of your system. Strictly for gaming, and since you're not experiencing issues, there's no need for a new processor or a whole new system.
Like was said above, add in cards can be used for the new features that newer chipsets offer.
Bottom line, new gpu and put the rest of your money in the bank.
