Third page. I kid you not.

Are you looking to improve security without impacting performance?

Then you need to upgrade to Intel Pentium 4 Processors with Hyper-Threading Technology.

Yeah right....just thought I'd share.

That ad would only appeal to an average person that doesnt know a thing about computers i.e. Dell employees :O

I think they're trying to say 'Upgrade your cpu and load more protection programs'....But to the average computer dumbass it sounds like 'Upgrade your cpu and it'll protect you'

I also have a question what they sell. I just bought a PC from them. They charge about $100 for installation. I did not choose that but when I got the PC, it is already all set up. I wonder what that installation is for.

$100 bucks for installation? Hmm...

What sucks about Dell is that they are becoming as scandalous if not worst than brick and mortar stores. At least when you purchase something from BB or CUSA, you can go back there and yell at the manager or whatnot if you are not satisfied with your purchase. It becomes more personal than talking to someone that did not even sell you the computer in the first place.

I doubt it. If it was for upgrading the CPU with protection programs it should have said THE instead of TO.

It sucks how folks prolly thinks that Intel P4 HT comes with some sort of security function.

I think they are refering to the new security feature that is built AMD's K8 line of chips and possibly the prescott that prevents buffer overruns (refered to as NX = No Execute). XP SP2 will activate the feature if your proc supports it.

Chips that support it

What it is

Buffer overrun protection
Memory buffers are always at or near the top of the list of security threats that are actually exploited by hackers. This is a serious problem, but not one that is easy to address, and Microsoft is introducing a number of changes to address the threat.

SP2 will include recompiled XP components using the latest compiler, which includes new anti-buffer overrun tools. XP SP2 will also include support for the no execute (NX) feature found in some CPUs. This will permit hardware-enforced safe memory areas that can be used only for data storage, meaning that no buffer overrun into those protected areas can be used to execute code and attack the system. It doesn’t stop buffer overruns, but it does block most of their potential for causing damage.

It's very much discussed in the industry that Dell is falling. They make cheaper quality machines, skimp more and more on the parts, and still use no-name knock off shitty mobos and propreitary PSUs. Their support gets worse every year. There problem is they are spreading too thin....going into too many areas, like printers, mp3 players, etc. They aren't big enough to do that, and it's hurting them.

I agree with you djnes. I can't believe the kind of hardware they use on their products. I thought Dell changed their ways on using crappy PSU's and Mobos?

they did, but then they went into all that other crap and went back to the shitty PSUs and Mobos.

I don't understand why any computer company would want to use anything but standard parts. I mean...i do, it's cause they want YOU to go to THEM if you have a problem, but i think thats shitty buisness.

BUT what do i know...i'm only a MCSE

I agree with you on that note. If their parts were to be top notch then it is ok, but when it is considered crap, that is a different story.

I have never seen a Dell in person, what kind of Mobo and PSU do they use anyways?

Dunno about the mobos, but generally Intel chipsetted and the PSUs used to be proprietary, and still may be, I don't know.

Their Motherboards layout are different that it cannot fit into a standard ATX Case and also their PSU are semi-propreitary, they Just rearrange the pins or something like that.

So some guy will come in your house and plug your monitor, keyboard, mouse, printer/scanner etc. in for you.
