A little over a week ago I built a new rig and was excited to finally have a new machine. Then 2-3 days later the usb ports started dying so I sent back my p8z68v-pro.
Next, I get a refund from amazon and ordered the gen3 version. I got it yesterday and everything was going great. I used the settings that I had used on the old motherboard to run p95 for 24 hours stable @ 4.5ghz & 1.3v, then played through the entire BF3 campaign.
Today however, I was playing BF3 and the comp froze. Just to check things, I ran linx and after 4 loops it froze but I could still move my mouse. After about 10 more seconds the mouse stopped responding so I rebooted. In the bios, my 3.3v rail was showing red and a value of 2.960v.
Next, I ran memtest for an hour just to make sure that my mem was good and it passed fine. Then after running memtest successfully for an hour, I boot into windows and as soon as I open up firefox, the system stops responding, then a few seconds later my mouse freezes and I'm forced to reboot. Next I put the cpu back to stock and the machine keeps freezing.
Next I clear the cmos and upon booting into the bios my 3.3v rail is back at 3.3v and the system passes 20 minutes of linx. After going back into the bios, the 3.3v rail is now down to 3v. Thinking that the bios was just flaky, I loaded the bios defaults and then updated to the newest one. In the new bios my 3.3v rail is back down to red and the machine continues to freeze in linx, (still even at stock).
I checked the ssd and the SMART readings are good, plus the intel toolbox says that the health is excellent just to rule that out. Then I try running with just one stick of ram and it continues to freeze.
After this last freeze, I turn off the system and unplug the psu, then put the ram back in and plug the psu cable back in. The red and green power lights come on at the bottom of the mobo like they're supposed to but now the system won't even power on.
I think that the mobo was just reading the 3.3v rail incorrectly since:
1. The old mobo never reported any problems
2. Clearing the cmos seemed to have temporarily raised it
and since the power lights on the bottom of the motherboard are on, I know that the power supply hasn't died. Did I get a second defective motherboard in a row or do you think something else could be wrong?
thanks in advance for any help
