new computer gives beeps, doesnt start

i just built a computer and its not starting. it gives me 5 second long beeps but doesnt auto turnoff.
the specs are:
pentium 4 prescott 3.0ghz
abit-max3
radeon 9600pro
1gb crucial pc3200
WD 160gb sata drive
zalman 7000alcu
380w antec truepower
1 120mm fan

im not sure what the beeps mean. what could be going wrong?
 
One long beep usually signifies a power or processor problem. I'm an AMD guy, so I wouldn't know if the Max3 supports a prescott without BIOS flash.

an antec 380w truepower is probebly enough to power my system 2 times over. theres nothin thats a big power hog except the processor.
do u really think it could be the processor?

anyone else have opinions please post them.
 
i fixed the problem. dimm slots 3 and 4 dont work. i dont feel like waiting for an RMA. what kind of performance decreases will i get if i run single channel instead of dual channel?
 
As far as I've read (I don't have much hands-on experience with Intel systems, as I don't own one myself), the performance decrease would be significant. Intel systems actually benefit a lot from dual-channel, unlike AMD ones which don't benefit as much. Are you sure it's the board? I'd try playing around with the sticks, and testing it with other RAM if possible first.
 
hmmm.... although the computer starts with ram in slot 1 and 2, it wont complete the windows installation due to ram errors. so i took out the 2nd stick which im sure has to be the bad one. hopefully i can rma it for a new stick and the computer will work in dual channel perfect,
 
computer seems to be working good now with the 1 stick of ram in it. ive been doing the prime95 torture test for a few hours and nothing has gone wrong yet.

what is the name of that popular memory testing program?
