I'm planning on getting a new case for my hp computer. I wanna know if I'll have any problems switching cases? It's micro atx and I'm looking at the white thermaltake shark. Will there be any difficulties removing the hard drive, dvd drives, etc? The hp case has very little space and poor ventilation so I'm willing to get a new one as long as I can actually do it. Thanks. :)
 
if your motherboard is for sure micro atx it should be good. although you might need to get a new power supply.
 
There will be no problems. HP uses all standard components. There standard mobo's are Micro ATX. Go slowly and make sure you plug everything back together and you will be fine.

I have moved a number of HP' s, ones from 1998 to a Am2 system a few months ago, into new cases without any incident.
 
You'll end up losing the Personal Media Bay and probably the front AV ports unless you're willing to do a bit of dremeling on your new case.

The personal media bay is very useless unless you buy their 200 dollar 300GB drive. :mad:
 
So I have my hp comp in the silver thermaltake shark case and its not powering on. I'm guessing I didn't plug something in or do you think the motherboard isn't compatible with the case? because I think I have everything right except the cable for the power button to power it on. Would I need a new motherboard or is it something else? I could take some pics if that helps.
 
did you screw the standoffs in ? (sorry noob question, but hey ive forgotten before) if not it wont turn on.
 
I actually have it running now but i'm using the power switch from the old case. There was an error when I started it up and stuff like new drives found but it seems ok. But anyway what are the standoffs? I think I'd like to use the case's power button, right now the old power button is hanging from the back, pretty ghetto. Does punching out the cases motherboards inputs have anything to do with it? I had to do it cause mine and the cases didn't match up.
 
So is it okay to use the old switch? Also is it all right if my system starts up with an error (It says System Failure Press F2 to continue) for a long time? Cause I think it'll be happening each time I start it up.

standoffs are the little brass things you screw into the motherboard mounting holes and then screw the motherboard onto them. theyre so its not grounded. but you did , otherwise it would be turning on at all.
 
Its fine to use the old switch but you really should just look up the motherboard model and find the jumper pattern so the new case switch works.

Actually, the standoffs are grounded, and often there are contacts around the screw hole so the motherboard will also be grounded through the standoffs. It's there by design.

Did you make sure you don't have any extra or misplaced standoffs underneath the motherboard?
 
Well it works now with the thermaltake's power button so I guess it's all good now. The only thing is the error that comes at start up. It says system fan failed press f2 to continue and I press f2 and its fine. Also like I mentioned before, the case is a little messed up because I had to rip out the case's motherboard cutouts. The standoffs (the holes where you screw the motherboard in); well I couldn't get all of the screws in. I don't know if that makes a difference, but everything seems fine except for the error at start up. Thanks for all the help btw.
 
Was there a fan plugged into the motherboard in the old case that isn't plugged in now? If so, there's a good chance you can disable that error in the BIOS.
 
Yes there was a fan plugged in the motherboard from the old case. But can I actually fix it in the bios with this motherboard? I figure that since its from hp I can't.
 
That kind of error is usually configurable. On some motherboards, you can actually set the exact RPM at which it will alarm. I would suggest you poke around in the BIOS and see what you can find.

If you have a fan in the new case which has a 3-pin connection, plug it into the (now) unused header and see if the error goes away.
