I'd like to get a new camera, well, not really, but i'm expecting here in a few months, and i don't want to be taking pics of my new baby with my old ass 1.3mp Fuji, lol.

so, i figured that there would never be a better reason to get a new cam. (i just couldn't justify it, with the old one still working, and me never taking many pics, and when i did, i never had to resize for the internet :p)

anyway, i don't want a dslr, or a slr look alike, something small would be my preference, but i will take a slr like camera if the price is right, and the specs are good.

I'm willing to spend 300-500. anywhere in there is fine. (or even more if it would be worth it in the long run)
will be mostly point and shoot, but i'd like to have the ability to take shots of fireworks (for a good example of functionality) if i so desire in the future
I'd like to get somewhere around 10mp.
no brand preference, as long as it doesn't look like ass.
sd would be preferred as it's by far one of the cheapest cards, that, and the wii can play my pics in a nice little on the fly slide show :D but anything will do, if it fits the specs.
internal rechargeable battery!

thanks in advance...

Sounds like your not needing something as fancy as an SLR, there are a few cameras that are PS and have a lot of SLR functionality, good zoom, good filters etc and high MP quality.

I know at work we sell a TON of the Canon SD600 - 630's and a few of the powershot 5xx line, both are very good point and shoot, all camera's now have the option for low light / night time shots, but the quality is something I havnt been able to find much of a review on for a P&S camera. No I am not a Canon !!!!!!, there are other great cameras out there, I used to own a FujiFilm Fine PIX that recently crapped out, and my Wife has a 2 megapixel anchient power shot heh.

I would recomend going into your local Best Buy, Circuit City or other retailer and just browsing around in your price range, get an idea of what you like in the price range then come back with a few cameras to choose between, and you can google reviews of them.

I would look at Canon, Sony, Fuji, Kodak, and Nikon has a few good PS cameras. I would stay away from the Casio and other cheaper ones, I return so many of them for defects and poor quality its not even funny. I am very eagerly awaiting my Powershot G7's arrival, there are a few others that are really good, I cant think off the top of my head but its an S2 IS or S3 IS are getting very good reviews. I have played with the S2 at work and liked it. And the SD900 recently came out I think, 10 MP as well.

hey thanks for the reply. i was just browsing around on newegg, and the g7 really caught my eye. i'm pretty sure i'm going to get one of those. i was however planning to stay away from casio and all the cheaper brand. it was basically between nikon, canon, kodak, and sony (and i really didn't want to get a sony... fuck them) and nikon and kodak don't have what i want (as far as newegg's stock atleast)

any other suggestions before i buy the g7?

the S3 IS has a 12x optical zoom I believe, if you needed something that powerfull out of the stock lens, the G7 you can buy lenses for from canon but only comes with the 6x optical. I am hoping my G7 show's up today  tired of waiting.

Also, it didnt matter to me but the G7 does not have the RAW format if you wanted it. I looked at it and the SD900 a lot before deciding on the G7 for its more advanced controlls, yet and size and ease (if desired) of a P&S

i'm fine without having raw format. it just makes it easier for me to send pics, and upload them to my site, i won't have to convert them.

i know that i can get new lenses from canon, that is pretty cool... but 6x is alright for me. that and the s3 is is way too big, lol

Too bad you dont want a Dslr. The Nikon D40 is around $500 with the kit lens. Ripskin is right with the SD600 and, such. Nikon isnt focusing like it used to in the P&S market. You might go to B&H for the best deal. http://www.bhphotovideo.com

yeah, i wouldn't mind having an slr, but i need portability... i am going to be taking this camera probably everywhere with me for spur of the moment shots ;)

Didn't exactly read the whole thread, but if you want a PS camera for low light, consider the Fuji F30 (or T30, can't remember) it takes awesome low light shots.

i decided on the sd900. i like the size of it better. and i really don't think i'll miss any of the g7 features. if i do... i can always drop it on ebay or the bst here...
