New built computer not booting, please help!

Well it's another one of those, computer wont boot threads.

I have a shuttle micro atx motherboard, the ones everyone has been buying off newegg. I heard the post from the "hotdeals" section and decided I'd build a decent computer for fun. Well it was refurbished but I actually got a new retail one because newegg oversold it. So I got everything in the case. Barton 2500+, the Shuttle microatx mobo, western digital hard drive 40gig 8mb cache, lite-on dvd-rom, kingston 512mb, antec micro atx case w/ 300w psu included, refurbished 9700pro.

I put everything in there...I did "figit" alot in the case, pulling out the mobo and sliding it back in multipul times but im not sure if that really could do anything, no transistors or anything look bent. I have all my power to everything, mobo, dvd-rom, HDD. I dont think it's the referbished 9700pro because the mobo has onboard video and when I put the monitor into that it dosnt do anything either.

What happens is when I turn on the computer it will start up and everything, no beeps though. The monitor will just sit black...like if it was on without the computer on. Just the little orange light chillin there on the monitor. I have the memory in dimm 1, that's ok right? There is a little green light next to the dimm1 that's on. I really am stumped.

I switched the jumpers on the hard drive to see if they were right, I tried cable select, master or single, and master settings. I also have my dvd-rom now on master. The IDE to the hard drive is in the IDE 1 slot and the IDE for the dvd-rom is in the IDE 2 slot on the motherboard. I made sure the motherboard is seated correctly etc. I also swapped another hard drive in there but it's still not working.

I'm so confused/upset/raging/tired/board/antsy.

Help!!
 
If the comp doesn't post, it's either the motherboard, cpu, or ram. A comp will still post without a hard drive attached; it just won't do anything else. The trick is to take out as many non-essentials as possbile to eliminate possible problems, take out the gfx card (and just use the onboard video) as well as any expansion cards that you have in. Then, Try swapping a different cpu first and then memory if it still doesn't work. If you have both a cpu and memory that you know work, it's the mobo.
 
Oh, do the fans come on at all? If not, it could be the PSU.

Troubleshooting a non-boot is no fun...
 
Yep, fans come on. CPU and PSU fans both do.

If the HSF was on backwords could that cause any problems? After looking at the awfully poor vantec instructions, I think I put it on backwords. I just took it off cleaned CPU and HSF and reapplyed my AS5 to the cpu. The HSF is back on and im double checking a few more things before I turn it on. I think im gunna have ram/cpu/hdd/dvd-rom in and test it with the onboard video.
 
unplug it all but the cpu, the mobo should give you some activity with no ram pluged in so you can verify the mobo is good. make sure you have the case speaker pluged in to get some beep codes.

It was the HSF I presume. I turned it on and there she blows! She got to the system check screen and wants me to enter the bios but I cant. I think because I have a USB keyboard plugged into it. I'll try a analog port keyboard and have her roxx0r boxx0r!

well, that's ghey. Now it wont work.

I turned it off..brought it into the other room and i turn it on with the new keyboard. It wont boot. I unplug the power cable then plug it back in and it works. I get into the bios and look at some stuff and then in about 2min it freezes. I turn it off and then turn it back on and it wont start... unplug the power cable and put it back in and then turn it on and it still wont do anything. I tried putting in the video card and it wont work there either. This thing is royally gay!!!!!!!!!!!!
 
Did you knock anything loose moving it? Try reseating the CPU in the socket. Other than that, retry the previous steps.
 
upon very close inspection of the CPU I noticed tiny tiny bit of the processor metal chipped off. The part you put the thermal paste on, one of the four corners has a very very very small chip off it.

Does that make it 100% sure that it's the CPU?

Yes, i suppose it could be.
 
Just ordered a Barton Mobile 2500+. My main rig has one of those and it works like a charm and it's only $8 more than the retail barton 2500+.
