New build, first SSD

I'm going to be putting together my new build this weekend, and it's the first time I've ever used a SSD.

I'll be using:

I plan on starting my install with my Windows 7 disc, then putting in my Win 8 64 bit upgrade. As I understand it I would simply install the OS on the SSD. I would also install games on the SSD and leave the standard platter HD for mass storage?

Any help would be appreciated! :cool:

Yeah OS, games, and other apps on the SSD and HDD for mass storage.
 
Not that its really a problem, for new builds, sometimes I leave the spinner unplugged during the windows installation so I know that only the SSD is connected. When Windows is installed, then just plug in the spinner and setup accordingly.

There is method to this madness. I've seen the Windows installer put boot partitions on these second disks randomly, so if you ever pull out the spinning disk, your system won't boot without assistance. It's typically a non-issue, but I have seen it!

I do that as a general measure on any install.

You never know where Windows is going to put that frackin' reserved space partition otherwise. Grrrr......
 
Yeah the 100MB system reserve partition it will usually choose to put on the HDD, so best to do the initial install with only SSD attached and then after its started/complete plug the other drive. If not, your ssd won't boot without the HDD attached.

My Win Server 2012 R2 Essentials did this last weekend.

Had 6 no-partition 1TB drives in the machine. This is the only time I didn't bother to pull the plug on drives 1-5 before installing (I forgot - it was 2am :)), and during setup I pointed the install to drive 0.

It installed Windows on drive 0, and installed the &$*!(@#$ *&!@$#*( reserved partition on drive 2.

WTF, over.
 
There is probably a fix for it, I know when it happened to me I just left the Windows install disc in the tray, it will properly boot after it gives you the "Press any key to install" or whatever. As long as you don't press anything, it will find your boot drive and boot correctly. Granted, that's a total pain in the ass, so might as well start over!
 
Yeah, definitely keep your platter HD unplugged. Windows likes to go rogue now and then. ;)
