Never Owned An LCD - Question

I haven't ever owned an LCD, so I am picking up a 19" (probably one of the ViewSonics) for Christmas. I was wondering how well something like that would run at non-native resolution. For instance native res: 1280x1024, playing FEAR at 1024x768, would it scale as good as it does on a CRT?
 
no it doesn't scale as well as on a crt. The size of the pixels is fixed so where a crt can change the size of it's pixels, the monitor will do some magic and try to stretch the 1024 pixels across into 1280 pixels. Some monitors do this interpolation better than others. Also some monitors allow you to not scale the image so you can run 1024x768 on the screen with the unused pixels blacked out around the edges.
 
for me, i game on my sony 17in. flat panel display with native resolution of 1280x1024 and sometimes, i do game at 1024x768 depending on the game and settings. like if i have bf2 set to all medium settings and resolution at 1280x1024, fps drops by about 40fps. IMO, it still looks good at 1024x768 although many with higher end hardware will dis agree.
 
It's going to depend on the model...

I've used some LCDs that look horendous at non-native res with shadowing etc. showing up around text and overall less than optimal picture quality.

I have a BENQ T905 19" LCD and to be honest I was suprised how well it scales. I wouldn't want to run the desktop bellow native res but the fonts are still reasonably clear and in games it's really not too bad (especially FPS games). I'm not saying they are sharp, certainly a CRT would render sharper fonts at 1024x768 etc. but they are still readable. I havn't found any issue with running games at non-native resolution on this monitor (I thought I would).

Native is always better but it would appear that the quality of the interpolation varies greatly between models.

I just bought the BenQ FP91+ 19", and I love it. I have to scale my res for FEAR, and it still looks great. Great color, brightness, awesome black levels. No dead pixels or anything. Got it on newegg for $311 shipped. BTW- I have an nvidia 6600GT, and I use driver scaling instead of monitor scaling.
 
I noticed that with LCDs it takes a while to get use to such a small font and brightness eventhough all this can be adjusted, still I miss the CRT goodness. One needs to do lots of focusing.
