Im looking to get a HTPC running on a TV.....no real budget(not absured amounts)......ive figured that i want to go the nettop(hence me putting this in the SFF area....i think they fall under the SFF atleast)......

anyhow i am trying to find one that has the following:

-HDMI support
-Wireless N

both of those are a must

also looking for it to be able to take a blue ray drive (something like the MSI wind Nettop, but that doesnt have HDMI).


im not real into the Nettop stuff, so if anyone knows of a machine that fits my needs(doesnt matter if I need to buy a blue ray drive if it supports it)...

edit: forgot to mention that this will be used for all the normal HTPC stuff....the online videos, the videos i have streaming on my network, and the like in HD where possible(so the ability to play HD back seamlessly is needed...), also need something that can run Win 95 in Virtual box(so we can play some You Dont Know Jack)

That case is pretty slick, but requires use of a slim drive.

Be sure to use the AC/DC adapter that comes with the motherboard rather than the one that comes with the case.

And woops, didn't notice you want to run VMs. Guess an Atom is out. It doesn't have VT, and as such would really suck with virtual machines. How big of a case are you looking at?

the problem with running an itx board is that it goes above price range(dont want more than ~300 with blue ray drive, whcih i can do with a nettop), and with a laptop, i would use an ultra slim notbooke but it will be in a not very well ventalated place, and we have a notebook fore everyone in the house already so another one is kinda pointless....

ill have to repreice out an itx system(last i saw with everything i need it goes to about 500 with a blueray)
 
Atoms won't run virtual machines that well, just to let you know. And that'll put you out of the nettop range, unless that's not important to you.

If it's a nettop it will HAVE to have Ion in order to play HD, which also unfortunately drives prices up some. You might wait a little while for the next generation of Atoms to come out, Intel will probably have them with powerful enough integrated graphics chips to handle 1080 by then.
 
The SU3500 and SU7300 chips really are the next gen Atoms. About 50% quicker, just fast enough to run HDCP media, spreadsheets and still get 6 1/2 hours+ of battery life on WiFi. They also support virtualization. Way to go...
 
the virtual pc part is only for running Win 95, worst case i can use a VGA cable to run a laptop up to the TV.......


any idea when the next gen Atoms are coming out ? ive got not much info on intels since im an AMD guy mainly......
 
yes it will be :).....the router is upstairs in an office, this is downstairs on the other side of the house where the main TV is, since we dont have an ethernet cable running there hardwiring is out of the question, and its going to be too much of a pain to run one down there as it is.
 
Yeah I hear you. I had to run a cable from where the modem is to my room, since the phone company was going to charge money for that, and we need two wireless access points anyway since the house has those old school wooden walls (terrible on wireless reception even though the house is pretty small). That was not too fun.
 
Wouldn't a Zotac MAG with a DVI/HDMI adapter be the wise choice?

now comes the question of a remote.....whats a good one that will let me control: XBMC(or MythTv, both run on a linux OS), a DVD player, my Plasma, and my DirecTV Tivo box? Would a Harmony be able to control a XBMC box ? i cant find anywhere that specifically says if it will or not....
 
hmm, that fits it.....but then i need to add ~50+ for a decent remote to control everything
