Hey guys finally came around to doing this as i have never done it before. gonna be installing a E6700 intel.

any suggestions/tips or warning info that i should know about please tell me

here are few questions that i need this forums knowledge on:

i see there are different core types: conroe, allendale, yonah, northwood, clovertown, etc, which one should i be gettings and which ones should i stay away from?

does the new proccessor include that thermal grease and alcohol wipe with it?
and how do i properly put this thermal grease on?

does this processor come with a heatsink/fan or do i have to get one separately?

how does everyone monitor thier cpu temps? (maybe by program/utilities if so can you guide me in the right direction)

man its alot to think about... ...:D any other suggestions please lay it to me

Ok here we go, 1st do you need to build right now? If so then just take how much you have to spend, decide if you wanna overclock or not then pick a CPU, they all run very well. Now if you dont have to build right now then wait till the 20th cause new CPU's come out and well prices might drop on the older chips, even if they dont the new chips run a tad faster and cooler and use less power, not to mention early tests show them overclocking like pure psycho madmen.

As for the thermal compound the heatsinks from Intel have some already on the HSF that you get with the CPU, so you dont need to buy any. Of course the stock HSF will work fine for stock chips but if you decide to overclock then you should look into aftermarket cooling and then also buy some paste, the pastes instructions should tell you how to do it. As for monitoring temps I use a free program called Core Temp.

Conroes and Allendales are the current desktop Core 2 Duos (the E CPUs). However, Wolfdale CPUs (45 nm shrink, desktop version of Penryn) are coming out now.

I don't know the pricing yet, but I would probably wait the week to see Wolfdale prices. I'm probably going to get a Yorkfield (quad core 45-nm).

Yonah was a CPU in the mobile Core line. Northwood is the name for a series of Pentium 4 processors. Clovertown is a Xeon Core 2.

If you buy a retail CPU, then you will get the heatsink/fan which has a thermal pad on it. Otherwise, Arctic Silver 5 is a popular thermal paste and their site has instructions.

SpeedFan and Coretemp work well.

I thought i heard somewhere that the different core types/names are that way because some of the core are defective in some areas and are downgraded to "lower" usable core. I'm not sure on this and would like to know which core names to stay away from if necessary

currently i have an E6300 and can only max out to an E6700. Do you guys think i can use the current E6300 fan/heatsink on the E6700 (keeping it stock @2.66Ghz)?

The 6300s and 6400s are probably what you were hearing about, since they have 2 MB of L2 cache vs. 4 MB for the rest of the Conroe line. The extra 2 MB of cache may have been disabled because of production issues or just to have a 2 MB cache, lower end CPU.

Also, can't you just overclock your E6300? I don't really fiind the 6300 -> 6700 move all that great if you can OC your 6300. My 6300 runs at 2.9 Ghz.
