I have a new ASUS Maximus VI Formula.
It replaces an older X58.
On my X58 I used an old X-Fi PCIe card outputting via SPDIF to my Yamaha receiver, worked fine.

Now today I plugged into the SPDIF and I've got nothing......realizing I'm now using Realtek drivers, which are installed correctly......the thing won't work???

I know the receiver and the optical cable work fine, obviously just used them last week.

In Windows control panel I choose Realtek Digital output(optical) as my default output.

I can't figure out what the heck is the problem?
 
Is there only one Optical option? I think my Asus motherboard has two for some reason, though only one works. Maybe that's coax and optical though...
 
The spdif option is enabled in the BIOS.
First thing I checked.
There is no coax, only spdif.
I need to look at the connection to verify light.

Check the supported formats in sound properties. If you're sending 192KHz to a 96KHz input, well...
 
Check the Communications tab in Control Panel\Sound. It could be muting the output when it hears something via the mic.

Using the ASUS Motherboard most recent RealTek drivers from the download page.
Even tried the drivers most recently released from RealTek's site....nothing

No microphone connected.

Like I said, I'm stumped....I had an optical output S/PDIF on my ancient X-Fi Titanium sound card working just fine on the exact same receiver with the exact same TosLink cable less than a week ago.....just using the Creative drivers from the matching webpage.
Unfortunately....I gave the card away when I sold my old X58 motherboard.
 
The problem here could be the cheap realtek chipset. Chances are the optical output is only for DTS or Dolby bitstreams as the chip likely can't do the encoding on it's own.

One way to test this is to load up something in VLC with DTS or Dolby audio and choose optical as the output.

There's reasons I have a Xonar card, can't stand cheap onboard audio, more often than not there's a nasty hiss when you turn the speakers up.

Yeah......I ordered a sound card last night.:mad:
I don't like RealTek, and this reinforced my opinion......although ASUS goes batshit about their "Supreme" sound,etc.......mine doesn't work.:rolleyes:
