I run the IT department at a small company which is small enough that I am the only IT guy. We recently had a manager leave. One of the last things he did was make his hard drive unbootable. He was the type that is computer savvy but not IT material. His leaving was not on the best of terms and he would have done something like this intentionally just to be spiteful.

The condition of the drive is this. It is a Windows 98 system. (no snickering) It was working right up until he left. The next time it was booted, the screen read the same error message as if an unbootable floppy disk was left in the floppy drive. The hard drive checks out just fine physically. I hung it out of another system and can see data, files and programs.

I would appreciate any suggestions to try to make this drive boot. I know this was done maliciously but having never been in this situation I'm not sure what steps to take to make it bootable again. Partly, I want to learn what to do to fix it and also what might be hidden on the drive that would drive someone to make it unbootable.

He could have easily deleted the boot.ini, autoexec, or other file nesseacry for windows 98 to boot. If you just want to get the machine running again reinstall 98....or if you don't wish to format you can repair the boots files from a win 98 boot disk.

You may also want to boot up with a win98 floopy and check with FDISK that the partiation is active and set to boot.
