Need Schooling on SAS Systems

I need some info/schooling on SAS systems. SAS stands for Serial Attached SCSI right? What are the advantages are there over standard SCSI or SATA?

So it looks like SATA drives can be used with a SAS controller, but SCSI( non SAS ) drives can not. That is what I was thinking.
