Im hoping to be building a new computer soon, and playing graphics intensive games like BF3, Skyrim, the new Elder Scrolls Online (once it comes out! :D ) Guild Wars 2, and possibly the new Far Cry 3 (just maybe..)

The computer ill be building goes as follows:


ASUS P8Z77-V LK and i5-3570k

G.Skills 8gb RAM

and the games willl be run off a OCZ Vertex 4 SSD.


The GPU i originally thought of buying was this one:

MSI R7850 Twin Frozr 2GD5/OC Radeon HD 7850 2GB 256-bit GDDR5 PCI Express 3.0 x16 HDCP Ready CrossFireX Support Video Card


Is this the best bang/buck i can get or would it be worth another 50-100$ investment to get a nicer GPU? Im hoping to run games like Skyrim at max settings with a steady FPS (50-70? Im not sure what would be best...). Also, with the motherboard i selected, will i be able to run an extra GPU when i have enough cash to buy one?

For $210 you really can't beat that card, you'd have to spend >$300 to get anything significantly better. It'll be able to max skyrim unless you are running alot of mods.

I agree, $200 is the 7850, $300 7950, $400 gtx 670, $500 gtx 680.

Also whats your resolution, anything at 1080p or less you aren't going to see much benefit going with anything higher then the 7850.
 
Planning on a couple 1920x1200s. Are there higher res monitors out there that are not crazy priced? I mean the Korean ones are nice but it would require me to drop a lot of money on GPU/CPU to make them FPS as nicely as 1920x1080/1200. Or am I not thinking right? Lol

As far as price goes, no haha. You are probably on the best price for resolution right now with 19x12 resolution (I'd stay away from 19x10 if you can).

Are you doing 2 or 3 span?

Probably 2 for a while. What's the next resolution size to go up to after 19x12? And how much would a monitor like that cost?

I suggest pricing that out for yourself as it all depends on your location honestly.

You have 1440 and 1600 resolutions and those rise in price considerably and so does performance needed to drive the games behind those.

I haven't really looked at monitors in a while honestly.

if the 7850 fell to ~$200, i would say go, but a 7950 OC w/ 7970 PCB at $300 is far better

Can you explain this? Im new to the hardware side of things, ive always been a software guy...

The 7950 is the next step up from the 7850, and it comes with the PCB (not sure what this is, what it does) from the 7970? Based upon these reviews, i think ill go with this card. I dont want to make the leap to GTX 670 because of the cost, so this card seems to be strong enough to withstand my needs for time to come.

Thanks for the reply. I think ill stick with 19x12 for a while. I dont want to fork up a ton of $ for the higher res screens and then be stuck with a GPU that cant handle it.

PCB means Printed circuit board. MSI HD 7950 OC uses the same board which is used on the ref HD 7970. That means high quality components like VRM, capcitors,chokes. Better stability while overclocking. HD 7950 running at the same clock speeds as HD 7970 is only 3 - 5% slower than HD 7970 . So its the best bang for buck card. here is a hardocp review of HD 7950 OC(900 Mhz) Oc'd to 1195 Mhz and compared with HD 7970 (925 Mhz)

you can see there is very less perf diff between HD 7950 (900) and HD 7970 (925 Mhz) and overclocked perf is amazing. MSI HD 7950 OC will easily run at 1 Ghz at stock voltage in AMD CCC and easily run as fast or slightly faster than HD 7970 (925 Mhz). If you want more performance you could go for voltage OC with sapphire trixx. good luck with your purchase. :)
