Well heres my specs:
AMD Athlon XP 3200+
1Gig Corsair Value RAM
XFX 6600GT 128mb
2 HD's (IDE)
2 Optical drives (DVD + Burner)

I need to upgrade my PSU, right now I'm using this satanic POWMAX piece of junk, and whenever the wiring gets shifted, it wont turn on. (go figure). Would this PSU be a good, relatively inexpensive upgrade for my system? I won't be seeing an fx-57 or 7800gtx anytime soon, so don't worry about upgradability.

PS. The only reason I shop at Tigerdirect is because I live down the street from their main US warehouse. I can order and pick up in 4 minutes or so.

TT is trash, get a recommended PSU.
Not so much trash as not as good as other items available at the same price point.

so what is wrong with it exactly?

i thought the only thing wrong with this stuff is because that they usually didnt give you enough power on the 12V rail(or at least most "bad" companies do that), but this one seemed to have a lot of power on the 12V rail

would this be a good choice(i can get it for like 30 bucks) to power a mid-range system, or is that still a bad idea since its aspire?

Quality of components used, line regulation, and the way it is rated (21-25C). A better unit will be made from higher quality componenets which protect your system when something does go wrong with your power from the wall, will be rated at a reasonable operating temperature (typically derating for an operating temperature could drop theat 34amps by 1/3). Basically a bad PSU doesn't provide your system with steady, well regulated (+/-% of rated rail) power or protect it from power sags, surges etc.

is buying a used power supply a bad idea?

some guy is offering to sell me an antec true blue 480w psu for $35, 22A on a single 12V rail, so that looks good plus its antec

my question is do power supplys start having less efficiency as time goes on, and do they ever just stop working? main reason is i don't know how old it is, but it is probably a year or two old and i don't want to buy it only for it to have low efficiency or for it to go out in a few months.

i'd say just get a new one for ease of mind. a psu is not something to skimp out on, as it is the life support of everything else in ur comp. thats not saying u have to go get the uber $200+ 510W PCP&C SLI DELUXE OMGWTFBBQ I WANT UR MONEY psu, but i'd say something like $80 would be decent. think about all the money ur spending on the other parts; getting a good psu is like buying some insurance for them, kinda. and its probably only like 10% or less of the overall cost.

so buying used is a bad idea?

its just that i have so little money to spend...im looking at less than $250 for upgrades...was thinking 160 for video card, 45 for psu, and 45 for another stick of ram. if i spend $80 on a psu than i cant get as good of a video card or another stick of ram...choices choices choicse

For an A7N8X, that Thermaltake is a great idea. On that particular board, anything that's more ATX12V compliant that that is going to spiral you into crossload hell. Keep in mind though, that if you EVER upgrade your motherboard you should upgrade your power supply too. In other words, keep the PSU with the motherboard because that power supply won't do you any good at all with some Socket A's and any Pentium 4's or Athlon64's.
