I just got a free Dell Dimension...

Pentium® 4 Processor 530 with HT Technology (3GHz, 800 FSB)
1GB Dual Channel DDR2 SDRAM at 400MHz (2x512M)
80GB Serial ATA Hard Drive
Dual Drives: 16x DVD-ROM Drive + 48x CD-RW Drive
17 in E773c CRT Monitor
128MB PCI Express™ x16 ATI Radeon™ X300 SE
Sound Blaster Audigy™2 (D) Card w/Dolby 5.1, and IEEE 1394 capability
Dell 5650 5.1 Surround Sound Speaker System with Subwoofer

I don't think the X300 SE is a good VC or is it??? I was thinking about selling it on eBay or something and buying a new VC. I've got about 130$ plus 30-40$ for selling the X300 SE. So What VC should I get that would be worth 160-170$?

I am not aware of any pci express card that much better in that price range, Wait it out a bit for the nvidia 6600 to hit the streets and you will have one hell of a card for under 200

nv 6600 is 128 bit ram isn't it? what a waste of a video card.

Why create pcix, ddr2,ddr3, etc for extra b/w when idiotic gfx card makers keep fucking the b/w up with 128 bit cards. We should be hitting 512 soon.. hopefully, gfg hurry up. it's like buying a ferrari for 300k then putting a suppped up honda civic engine in it.

If it were me, I'd russle up the $ to put a good graphic board in that particular system, a 6800GT or x800Pro. Anything less would seem like a crime as your videocard would be your bottleneck.

At a minimum, a 6800.

I think i'm going to go with the 6800 when I dig up the money some how, thanks

Yeah definately a 6800 of some sort. Your system is good apart from the graphics card.

I hear this way too often "it's a good computer except X and Y" and they have to pay full price to upgrade it later...

This is why I steer my customers away from places like Dell...and get them into my custom built machines based on their wants and needs.

As to your dilema...the ATi x600 pro or the nVidia PCX5750 are your only hope...but they aren't much of an upgrade. You can get an x600 XT or PCX5900 for about $200 , but that's really not that much of an upgrade...at least not $200 worth of an upgrade.

Anyway, as most have said, wait for nVidia's sub $200 PCI-e cards or save up a bit more for a PCI-e version of a 6800 series card.

a 6800 can be had for like $275. i think in your price range take a look at the pci express 5900

the ideal vcard for your budget right now would probably be a 6600/6600gt (or possibly a x700), none of which are currently available. waiting a month or two would probably be worth it for one of these compared to a x600.

people keep on suggesting the 6800/x800 series of cards...but the thing is they dont even make those cards in PCIe flavors?

pci-e x800xtpe's are scarcely available afaik (even more so than the agp versions).

Wait about 3 weeks or so and the pci-express Nvidia 6600GT will come out, which is a great videocard to replace the x300 with.

You can get an X800 SE for PCI-e
