Was after a repaclement raid card to fit into my current server.

needs to be able to:
  • Hotswap
  • Do RAID 5
  • Be compatible with Chenbro 36 SAS Expander
  • Be able to support 3tb+ drives for future proofing

all this to sit into my Norco 4224 with
CPU: i7 950 Standard Clock
Mobo: Asus P6TSE
RAM: 6 x 4 GB TEAM Elite 24Gb Total
Hdds:
6 x seagate 2tb
4 x WD 2tb
6 x seagate 1tb
2 x WD 1tb
500gb WD Raptor (os)
totally roughly 28.5TB
and random other drives
GPU: GTX570
PSU: Corsair GS600 (will be Corsair AX 1200 after tomorrow)
RAID cards:
HIGHPOINT 2680 (DOESN'T WORK WITH EXPANDER, WANT TO GET RID OF)
LSI SAS3081E (DOESN'T DO RAID 5) Plugged into Chenbro 36 port Expander

basically i want to get rid of the 2 reaid cards and get just one big simple one, to support at least 24 sata Drives

Cheers.

I would look LSI megaraid with a 512MB+ cache and also make sure you purchase the BBU so that you can set the cache to write back (for performance).

Areca cards have the better compatibility with non enterprise drives, an Areca 1882i will give you the ability to run a dual link to your expander card, and give you raid 5,6 etc Its also a very very fast card. You can also upgrade the ram on the card and add a BBU.

If you then wanted to add more drives via a SAS box, you can then use a 8087 to 8088 cable or get a 8087-8088 converter for another 24 drives.

have you looked into zfs? maybe freenas or nexentastore.

you might be able to reuse your existing lsi card with it.

i'm pretty much done with "hardware" raid cards after using it for mechanical disks.

i use the ESXi all-in-one build described by the longest thread in this forum, and it works pretty well.

never really was keen on linux or software raid, i like hardware raid because i can combine all that high end components into one massive system, i don't want to have to put money into a second case etc. rather have it all on the one os, and i'm running windows 7 on the system because i also use it as my media centre / a second workstation, 10m hdmi cable, wireless keyboard mouse, works a charm.

i might get a couple of 300gb raptors and have a play with it at work tomorrow, may as well get paid to learn.

You want to put $500 or $1000 into a RAID card, but won't put $40 into a second case?

Separate the roles is a good thing, imo. Second system can act as "backups" as well.

second case. Motherboard. Psu. Cpu. Ram. Pretty happy with my Norco 4224 would rather fill it and be happy with it then have more system. And I like the idea of a sas box. But definitely will have a play around with them at work. If someone could throw a list of the better Linux based ones for a noob to play around with.thatd be great.

I've got a feeling that a second case/psu/mobo/ram/cpu etc etc is much less than $500.

My problem with what you're suggesting is you're going to use a bunch of drives that aren't on the HCL for whatever raid card you buy.

If you look at the # of posts in this forum about people's raid arrays randomly flat-lining, 90% of the time it has to do with Raid5, and or disks that aren't on a HCL.

You're also using the built in SAS expander in your norco case, which possibly puts your cable length and signaling voltages out of spec for SATA drives. (Source)

It's likely/possible you're going to have some weird problems with disks dropping out of the array down the road.

Even if you buy a good card like an Areca or modern LSI card, you still may run into this issue.

ZFS distro's are much less picky about disks, (though pickier about HBA's), better at identifying failing disks, and has better redundancy features available than any hardware HBA.

Norcos 4224's dont have a built in expander, only the DS boxes do (which the OP isnt talking about) and plenty of people including myself have run that exact expander the OP (infact the same setup the OP is suggesting has been done numerous times) without issue.

But the biggest issue the OP will face is drive support as you mentioned, its why i reccomended Areca since they have the best HDD compatibility of all the higher end raid cards

I have an Areca 1880 running with that exact same Chenbro 36x expander.

Brutal speeds in Raid6 and Raid1.

i'm pretty keen on that one, but finding one available in Australia is becoming hard..

Send techbuy an email, thats where i got mine from, for a 1880ix-24 was 1328 + shipping and came with the 6x SFF-8087 to SFF-8087 cables.

Also there is a few listings for the 1882i and 1882ix on static ice (the 1882i is the latest model)
