I just order a GTX260 for my main rig and I'm thinking about upgrading to a sli setup and getting another one in the near term.

For this I need a new mobo (not a big deal) What should I get? (possibly looking down the road to get a mobo with 3 slots, just thinking)

I need more power (confused, My current 600 watt might run it... but 24/7 would most likely die after not to long a while.)

That's an interesting product. No need to shell out over $100 on a mega PSU that will require pulling out and reconnecting all the cables. Having two PSUs is also more secure. If this thing fits in a 5.25" bay like advertised, it's a clear winner in my book. Nice find. :cool:

 
Very interesting choice - I had heard about those but never seen a listing for one. (Might also be worth asking in the PSU section)

As far as the mobo goes, I've yet to see any real stats on the effect of anything less than x16 lanes for GPU folding speeds, but you could realistically go as old as a BadAxe2 (975X) for 3 PCIE slots (but obviously no SLi support... so that's not really a great choice, given it is your main rig, and you'd like to run SLi. Potentially a choice if it was a pure folding rig...)

So I figure you're limited to a 680i/780i/790i board. Personally, after all the horror stories I've read about DRAM voltages etc on 680i boards, I'd be leery of choosing one of those. Unfortunately, 780i boards can still be somewhat expensive (and some are still unstable). Looks like the XFX 790i got a fantastic review from [H] here, but I don't see it listed on the Egg (unless I missed it).

From what I have read, the eVGA 750i FTW is one of the better SLI boards out there. It does not have the Data Corruption issues cropping up on the 680i/780i and isn't ubber expensive like the 790i. In addition, the 750i OC's much better than any of it's brethren.

After reading this [H] article, I came to the conclusion that this will be my next MoBo. I would ONLY contemplate the other boards if you're looking at 3 way SLI.
 
First a comment concerning the new 260.... Frick ;)

I didn't see an efficiency rating for this power supply. It would be nice if it was 80+ but since it wasn't listed it makes you wonder. Anybody see any reviews for it listing an efficiency rating?

Another potential issue is that since it mounts in the drive bay it looks to exhaust all the hot air into your case. If you are running 2 or 3 big toaster oven like video cards would this be a problem? How's your case for ventilation?

You dont need a motherboard do you? Just throw some parts together on a pizza box and get it folding :D

Well the overpriced 9800gtx that I got at BB is going back.... but I want to find a 8800gt that I can put in a boxen that already has windows in it.

I might look at a 2nd 260, but I'd have to get another PSU and the card, 400 total. I can get 2-3 8800GT's for that.

 
Ya know what I love about that drive bay PSU? The fact that it has 3 fans (one is 40mm in the rear and I assume there are 2 other 40mm fans somewhere). These things are going to be LOUD if it is near capacity. At 350W powering 2 GTX280's, it'll be pretty close to that. All of that heat is yes going into the case and not out the front.

Personally at $90 for this, I'd rather upgrade my PSU to handle a GPU upgrade.

Perhaps it's a problem for those who have confined space inside their cases. I run my cases open and my main case is a dual compartment server chassis, and therefore segregated from the drive bays.

Aside from its compact size, the big advantage for this kind of PSU is that it's dedicated, and there's much less power draw from the primary PSU making the system more stable. This could become standard in the future as GPUs get more and more power hungry and enthusiasts increasingly run multiple cards. There's a practical limit to how much power PSUs can output from a single outlet.

Why did you send back the 9800GTX to replace with a 8800GT? Is it solely the cost differential? The 9800s will outproduce most 8800s. Excluding price, the downside is the two-slot install requirement.

You don't have the whole picture:

What I have now:

8800GTS320 (my old card) works fine in HTPC
8800GT In the wifes system, whines like no tomorrow probably getting RMA-ed
9800GTX in my system, over priced (was 275 by the time I got out the door)

What I plan to have shortly:

8800GTS old card in HTPC
GTX 260 placed order 4 hours ago, going in main rig
8800GT/GTS for wifes computer
8800GT/GTS for file server, it does not even have a monitor, but it has windows so it can do the GPU ;)

Further out (I hope we get a sli client)

Upgrade main box to sli and get a 2nd GTX 260

 
Yes, a 9600GT is a nice alternative because it consume less than a 8800GT for roughly the same ppd. I'm considering one for one of my windows boxen.
