Hey all, Im building a new rig in the next couple of months, and needed some input on a power supply unit. heres what i think im going with:

-AMD Athlon 64 X2 4400+
-ZALMAN CNPS9500 HSF
-Asus A8N32-SLI
-Hitachi Deskstar 250GB Serial ATA II 7200RPM (x2)
-OCZ EL Platinum Revision 2 1GB (2 x 512MB) (x2 for 2 GB)
-XFX Geforce 7800GTX 256MB 450MHz Core and 1250MHz Memory (x1)
-Bean Tech BT85 Acylic Case /w 4 80mm Fans

I bought an Ultra X-Connect 500W PSU that i bought earlier this year when i got the clear case. but now im hearing that they suck. I bought it cause it looks awsome, but id rather not kill my components. Is there a good PSU that looks anywhere near as cool as the x-connect? thanks

I would want quality over looks. That's why I chose Seasonic .. with sleaving it certainly looks good :) Anyways .. if you still want a good looking out of the box psu I would go for ocz. Hiper certainly looks nicer but ocz is of better quality.

Btw did you check out the new enermax liberty? Doesn't have the looks of the hiper but still looks awesome + the way the cables are makes it better. Not mentioning it is one of the most reliable psus at the moment.

Power Suppy?
Rhymes with Puppy? :p

(fixed)

don't get the Modstream its not that great a supply
rather get a Powerstream, other favorites are Seasonic S-12's
the ever popular PC Power and Cooling 510
good budget choices would be FSP

I distrust flash, especially at any pricepoint that doesnt break the bank
the point is your paying for it and where its coming out of is the quality of the real components

The trouble with the X-Connect is that while it doesn't suck on an absolute scale, it's that all of its specs were measured at an internal operating temperature of a measly 20°C/68°F (which is impossible to attain unless the ambient room temperature is below 5°C/41°F). But at typical internal operating temperatures of 40°C/104°F to 50°C/122°F, the total usable power drops by about 40% from there, leaving you with a "500W" PSU which performs like someone else's 300W unit. And based solely on the amperage capacity ratings of that PSU at 20°C/68°F, I'd say that its performace is at best similar to that of the average 400W unit from one of the known "good" brands.

if this review is true.

In all kindness, that test proceedure can't seperate what is a good supply from a marginal one
99.8% of the reviews out there are simply of features and esthetics
and the best that can be said about power quality is it didn't blow up that hardware configuration that day

Power Supply Testing Agilent Application Note (pdf)
that is how its really done, and currently few are able to get even close
that seems to be changing slowly,
PCP&C has announced a Chroma automated test system available for reviewers,
Oleg Artamonov at Xbit does a pretty good job
and last weekend I got just a little bit closer myself
(now I just need several thousand dollars worth of load moduals :p )

Highly reccomend an OCZ powerstream. I just got mine today and it is amazing, it has so many features that our really convienet suchs as the 20 pin connector that you can add the 4 pins to to make it a 24 pin and the HD and PCI cables are very instensely sleeved and everything is very nice.
