could someone point me to a guide that explains ram and overclocking for p4 cpus.
i want to know about how ram effects overclocking. 2.8e, ai7 mobo, and oczddr500,
 
i'm wondering what rams settings will give me the best and most stable overclocks and what some of the ram settings mean. cas latency, 1:1, 5:4, f1, street racer, etc...


edit: cpu-z says performance mode disabled under memory, wtf is that.

1:1 means ur cpu fsb and your ram speed are the same. 5:4 is the ratio of cpu to ram, you'll probably be using something like that because u have a higher ddr freq. ddr is just double what the actually ram does. so 200x2 is 400 so ddr3200 and so forth.

CAS Latency , sometimes referred to as CL or CAS, is the minimum number of cycles the ram must wait until it can read or write again. Obviously, the lower the number (time), the better.

tRCD is the delay before the data on a particular row in memory is read/written. Again, the lower the number the better.

tRP is basically the precharge time of the row. tRP is the time the system waits after writing something to a row before another row can be active. Once again, lower is better.

tRAS is the minimum value for how long a row can be active. So basically, tRAS is how long the row has to be turned on. This number varies quite a bit with RAM settings.

most stable overclocks would be to start what your mobo recommends in the default settings, then goto what your ram says it can do then tweek from there. (ex. 2-3-2-6<-what your ram can do, 2.5-3-3-6<-what ur mobo says, u can manually adjust this in the bios obviously) i don't think you'll be doing more then 250x2 or ddr500 so your ram should be underclocked for now. the pretty much basic overclock is to jump up your fsb according to what your ram can do. so if your at a 220fsb for the cpu bump up the fsb to 225 and run either 1:1 or 5:4 depending if your ram can go that high. try not to go over 250 speed for your ram especially at 5:4 because i'm not sure if u even can. or if your ram can handle it for now at least. need anymore questions pm me, aim me, or keep asking and a Hard Junkie will give u some more answers.

opethisgod: i'd start with the timings as loose as they go, so they aren't the limiting factor. (loose = higher numbers) then push up the fsb with the memory at 1:1. you should also up the memory voltage so that that doesn't get in the way either. your memory should be able to run 250fsb 1:1 at the rated timings/voltage, but it's best to approach that slowly so you don't overshoot the capabilities of your system. once you get to a 'comfortable' overclock, start tightening the timings (lowering the numbers) one at a time until it stops being stable, then put the one you were adjusting back up a notch or two so it's stable and try adjusting the next one. if you stop at 250fsb, put your memory at the rated timings (probably 3-4-4-8 @ 2.7 volts, if i had to guess) and go from there. adjust the cas latency first. ideally, you'd get to 2-2-2-6 timings or so, but that isn't too likely with pc4000 memory.
