I got a 9800 pro that has a cpu hsf that was attached with arctic silver epoxy. Unfortunately the hsf cannot adaquately cool the card and i get mad artifacting in games. How should I go about removing the hsf? Thanks. :(

That epoxy is really hard, but I suppose you could try a razor blade. You have to be very careful when you do it though. How much of the stuff did they goop on?

i really don't know how much was used but yea the hsf gets so hot under load i burned my finger touching it. :(

i read that you can also put the card in a antistatic bag and stick it in the freezer and the expoxy will break down but is that really safe for my card?

I haven't personally done it....

But I have heard no stories of a card getting damaged, so it should be ok.

well that's that. the gpu core shattered when i removed the heatsink. YAAY! ****ing what kind of idiot uses epoxy on a piece of machinery that has moving parts that may have to be replaced one day? **** ***** ****! The hilarious part of it is that i don't have the money for a new video card right now so looks like its back to this piece of shit gf3.

Did you just pull off the heatsink?

of course not. i used the credit card screwdriver trick and i was a gentle as possible when doing it.

Still a brute force method... Razor blades are the only option.

there's no way a razor could have penetrated the epoxy, the stuff is as tough as metal (looking at it now). the fan that was mounted on the heatsink was 40 mm, pretty high speed, and still it couldn't cool the heatsink properly. there's wasn't room to mount a 60 mm fan on it so i really had no choice but to try to remove it. even idle the thing was scorching hot.

and yea the previous owner is an ****ing idiot, only an idiot would mount a hsf designed for a low power cpu on a high powered video card. :(

It was probably the amount of thermal epoxy he put on, you only need a very small layer. 9800s didn't need that much cooling, any CPU heatsink would have worked fine.

Oh well, I am sorry to hear about your loss. :(
