I'm currently installing a Thermalright Ultima 90 on my mother board(p35 DS4), and there seems to be a bit of horizontal wiggle room, meaning I can grab the top of it and twist it side to side, however it's stable vertically. Should I be concerned about this? Or is this a normal function?

This is for the 775 socket, not AM2.

I have never had the Ultra 90 but I do have the 120+ and I have to put something between the X bracket and the top of the heatsink that the X brakcet sits on to give it more force when I'm screwing it down.

Others have used plastic washers between the backplate and the motherboard...some use the Dime/Penny thing between the X Bracket and heatsink..

Do a search on it and you should be able to find a 'How-To' guide.

Decko87,

I'm no expert, but I did stay at a Holiday Inn Express last night....

All kidding aside, I really don't know a lot about these things, but I did just install an Ultima 90 on an Abit P-35 Pro over an Intel quad6600. I used AS5 and had lapped both the processor and the Ultima 90. Arctic Silver 5 is a slippery grease if you've never had the pleasure of using it yourself.

I thought everything was secure and then I mounted my motherboard in my case. Of course, I had to grab the cooling fins to do so. Yes, they twisted around. Meaning, the Ultima90 twisted back and forth. I think that is the same motion you're describing.

All I did was re-twist it and let it sit. I've checked it since then (several weeks at least) and it seems to've tightened up. It could be either the AS5 solidified (or something) or the seal between the processor and cooler tightened up so the amount of suction to overcome to twist or pull is more than it was.

In short, don't worry.

Best of luck,
Ken

Yeah about that, I don't have an X bracket, I have one with spring loaded screws on it.

Ken,

Thanks! That seems to be the same thing we're experiencing. It seems to be hardening as well.

And Lames, we're using the Ultima 90 not the Ultra 90. Thanks for all the help. :)

Oh ok, sorry. My mistake. Like I said, never messed with the 90 before.

But even after what I've done to try and tighten my 120+..it still wiggles a bit. I wouldn't worry about it to much..

LOL! Whoops! Sorry again! It's Friday and I'm still at work so my mind is still asleep.;)

i have an ultima90, i knew the stock mount will still have wiggle room from reading about the 120X. i had some 2mm thick foam sheets i purchased from joann's (its like micheal's arts and craft shop) that i cut into the shape of the heatsink base with a hole in the middle so the nipple in the cross bracket can go into. i stacked about 4-5 of them using double sided tape to hold them together.

obviously, the bracket will sit higher than usual so i hand screwed them in to thread them and used a screwdriver to finish it, even alternating to get even pressure. the bracket now has a slight curve in it do to the foam pads/pressure from looking at a side view. now i can't even turn the heatsink. i didn't do a before/after test, just did it from the start. my e2140 runs hotter than c2ds anyway.
