I'm trying to pickup a fast and relatively cheap OS/App/game drive for a windows reinstall. So far my options are:

a new White Label 10k RPM 600GB 32MB

a new White Label 10k RPM 500GB 64MB

a used Momentus XT 7200 RPM 500GB 32MB

The White label's have a 1 year reseller replacement warranty and the XTs have Mfr warranties that range in length from 1-2 years. Which would you go for?

SSDs are way too pricey to be an option.
 
The Momentus XT, hands down. The SSD read cache on the XT will perform better than 10k spindle speeds for general use.

I say just the opposite. The 4 MomentusXTs I have do not perform well at all. I never seem to get any advantage at all of the SSD part and I have used these in desktops and laptops.
 
Until SSD's got cheap enough, I was doing a ton of XT's in everything from Old XP machines to early 7 machines as a speed boost. It's nowhere near to allaround boost that an SSD has, but for everyday use, they helped noticably. Personally, I rocked a 300GB Velociraptor for about a year and always wondered why everyone raved about them. Maybe it's the difference in workload?
 
Makes sense. Going by what i've read about SSHDs they seem more helpful if you do a lot of tasks that use the same files.
 
If you have an recent Intel board you might look into the Smart Response Technology available through the Intel Rapid Storage utility. It uses a small SSD (max 64GB) to cache commonly used files.

It works the same way as the Momentus XT, except it allows for larger cache (8GB on XT). As well as being faster then the single flash chip on the XT (remember Flash is only fast when several chips are accessed at the same time).

You can get a 32GB SSD from Microcenter for ~$30, or other stores if you prefer.

This would allow you to use a large drive for your main storage and then the cache would be transparent to you and the OS.
