hi, ive got a question about using SATA and IDE drives in the same system. Im planning on gettting the new MSI Neo4 SLI board and was wondering if its possible to use both SATA drives and IDE drives. the reason i ask, is that a friend of mine recently bought the board and installed a new SATA drive and an older IDE drive he had for storage( by older i mean from his old case). anyways, we formated both drives and installed windows on the first SATA drive (which was set as the priorty boot drive). everything worked fine up untill the point where he would reboot it. then he would get a boot error. and even taking the IDE drive out would fix it, so we would have to reformat and reinstall. finally, he just put the SATA drive in and left out the IDE drive. anyways, I also have 2 IDE drives that i plan on using in my new system, one internal and one that im gonna get a USB 2.0 external enclosure for, and im going to get a raptor 74gb drive as my primary drive. any ideas so i dont run into the same problem? thanks for any input you may have.

Need help using both SATA and IDE

You need to look at the boot sequence in the BIOS.
There's a separate entry in the Advanced BIOS features menu for 'Hard Disk Boot Priority.' Ensure that your SATA drive is at the top of that list, then set the main boot sequence list to boot from 'Hard Disk.' That's how it was on all of the Abit boards I've worked on, and as I read the maunal for MSI K8N Platinum SLI (something you and your friend should have done
) I see how that board is as well. Modify the 'Hard Disk Boot Priority' setting in Advanced BIOS features to put the SATA drive first. I don't mean to sound snide/condescending, but this is the second thread I've answered this question in this week, and both times, I went to the mobo maker's website and looked at the manual for it to see how to setup the boot sequence. The manual comes in the box, it's there for you to read. I'm serious, mobo manuals make great bathroom reading. You'll learn a lot about your system, and be able to troubleshoot many simple things like this on your own.

and as a general observation
many mobos also have an additional entry typically under bus manager or other name
which will shift focus from IDE to SATA and back (all chipset\BUIS specific they get implemented and named differently)
again a careful review of the BIOS options as documneted in the manual is called for
