Ok so I currently have:

AMD Athlon 64 3000+ S754 2GHZ
ASUS K8N-E DELUXE
Corsair CVS DDR400 2x512MB
ASUS 6800GT 128MB AGP

So as you can see my upgrade possibilities are very limited with AGP and Socket 754, so I'll just replace all these parts.

Before that, just so you know, I don't want to spend more than 1000$ CAD. I don't want SLI/Crossfire video cards/motherboard. I plan on overclocking but nothing hardcore. I play most of the latest CPU/GPU intensive games like HL2, Oblivion, F.E.A.R., GRAW, NFS:MW, BF2142 when it comes out etc. But, I don't want to spend a lot on the video card, I'm waiting for the next generation of cards and DX10.

So I was thinking:

E6300 1.86Ghz (Don't really want to spend more on the CPU)
Gigabyte DS3 (Or ASUS P5B ? Something else ?)
Corsair XMS2 2X1GB PC6400 DDR2-800 CL 5-5-5-12
7600 GT (Or X1900 ? Something else ?)

So how's that ?

Feel free to give any suggestions or ask questions. Thanks!

I have seen a couple Conroe budget builds for $800 U.S. posted. So it should be possible. Look at the Gigabyte DS3 with that E6300. Its a very popular mobo for the E6300 & E6400 overclocking crowd. That Corsair RAM will work with the DS3. Look into GSkill's version. I think its cheaper and it too also works with the DS3 mobo. The video card is a personal choice based on what you want to do with the rig. For gaming obviously the x1900 is better but its also going to be more expensive. If you arent into gaming then the 7600GT is plenty. If you wanted to come up to something more than the 7600GT but not the x1900 then the 7900GT would also be another choice. Again, this a personal decision on your part based on needs and budget. If you think you'll absolutely upgrade to the DirectX10 cards later this year then dont get an expensive card right off the bat. You could get eVGA card and hope to capitalize on their 3 month step up program. I'm not fully sure the details of that program so look into it closer before committing to it.

Ya the DS3 seems to be one of the favorite board for E6300 overclocking. About the RAM, G. Skill is kinda hard to find in here so I'll go with the Corsair. For the video card, I read about EVGA step-up program and yes you have 90 days to upgrade to a new card. I'd like to wait for DX10 cards but when are these coming out anyway ? If it's soon I'd definately get an EVGA, probably a 7600GT to hold me off. X1900 are kinda too expensive.

The DirectX10 cards are coming out this year but honestly I have yet to see an official date for them. VISTA got pushed back so I dont think there's a big hurry for ATI and nVidia at this point.

If all they could give us is a date! I don't even care about specs ... just a date. Hahaha. :D

This inexpensive memory is highly regarded around here:

See if you can find it in Canada.

Also, I'd suggest getting an X1900 series card instead of a 7600GT. The new ones just came out so look for some deals on the older models.

I think after selling your old stuff, you won't come anywhere near $1000 CAD.

We have this RAM, 95$ for 1GB, or 190$ for 2 x 1GB. The reviews seems to be really good and it's way cheaper than the Corsair at 265$, but the Corsair one was 800mhz ... think 667 or 800 is that much of a difference ? If any ... But I think I found my RAM :D

About the video card, still not sure what I'll get, but the thing I'm sure is, I want to buy a card that I can trade-up in the future. Saw an EVGA 7900GT 256MB for 283$ ... might get this ... with the money I saved by switching my ca... RAM to the Patriot. :D :p The X1900 is a little more expensive. Anyway I don't worry much about the video card.

Oh and, it will be under 1000$ CAD for sure. Even without selling my current stuff. But I'm selling it, trying to keep my upgrade as cheap as possible while getting good parts though.

Avoid the cheaper GSkill RAM with the DS3=P

Looks good to me.

I have a DS3, and I can't tell if its the DS3 or the RAM thats crapping out (stability wise) at about 305 FSB. I'm going to eliminate the ram as a problem soon by upgrading to some quality DDR2 800. I think there are some automatic (hidden) ram timings which are preventing me from going higher. But most people seem to be having great luck with an e6300+DS3.

Where did you find this RAM? NCIX carries Patriot Signature RAM:

($106 - http://www.ncix.com/products/index.php?sku=20098&vpn=PSD21G6672&manufacture=Patriot) but the same RAM he posted is listed as no longer available on their site.

If anyone knows where to find this, please let me know -- looking high and low for this up here in Canuckia.

Exactly what I have written down for possible build, though Im thinking the Asus would be a better choice as its getting lots of rave reviews.

If you wish you can upgrade to conroe with about US $325-350 You just need to buy an ASROCK or ASUS Motherboard (about $70 USD) that supports AGP and DDR (I've choosed ASROCK 775DUAL-VSTA because it was the unique that supported also SATA raid 0) but Overclock limited to 300 FSB. And you can buy an Conroe E6300 (about $270 USD) or an E6400 and you can use (until came DIRECTX10 cards) your 6600 VGA CARD and your DDR and wait for DDR2800 become cheaper :)

See the performance that you can get from an E6300 ;)
