Okay, so I'm using 9 1TB drives and I also have a single 1.5TB drive.
I want to create a Snapshot of all of them (if possible), with a single parity.
I've been told I should use two parities for more than 5 drives, but my plan is to see if and how fast this RAID 5 array will fail. If it fails, I'll only use RAID 6 from then on.
These are my questions:
1.) Can I use the 1.5TB in the array? If so, will I lose the extra 500GB? And if not, how could the 1TB parity be accurate in restoring my data if there is a 1.5TB drive?
2.) I have figured out that I am supposed to create single-drive RAID 0 arrays for all my drives (I'm using a Perc 5/i card - correct me if I'm wrong).
I have also figured out how to create a Pool. I mount the drives into a folder in C:\ which I called "Mount". That way, I don't see the separate drives in "My Computer."
But, I don't know how to create a Snapshot, as they call it.
From what I understand, a "Pool" is a JBOD where if you lose one drive, that's all you lose.
And a Snapshot is basically RAID 5/6 or infinity where you can have as many parities as you like. You can also add drives to it without losing all your data.
When I tried to create a "Pool", I was asked which letter I wanted to give the new drive. That worked great.
But when I created a "Snapshot".. I wasn't asked. So.. there was no RAID 5.
That's basically what I am confused about. Am I supposed to create a "Pool", give it a letter, and only THEN go and create a Snapshot FOR that Pool?
But then, wouldn't I have only one DRU and one PPU?
This all just seems a tad complicated, and since most of my sensitive data is going to be on this RAID array.. I need to be sure.
