need help restoring from a backup file in XP

I was having some serious issues with my XP Pro desktop PC, couldn't get it to network with the other XP Pro laptops on my network. So, I decided to run the backup utility and save it on an external USB drive. I reinstalled XP Pro on the desktop and everything networks fine now .. however when I try to run the Backup wizard to restore from the .bkf file (117gb) that I created, I get an error message that "The backup file contains unrecognized data and cannot be used".

I could really use some assistance with this!

well it sounds corrupted

this is how youd have verified it

but it sounds a little late for that
you can try to eliminate potential hardware issues by dismounting from the extrenal and attaching directly via IDE (since its a laptop that would likely entail a seperate computer and an attempt to retore via a LAN)

I personally just Image partitions generally with Ghost
or backup data directly and verify with fsum
