I have a PC with a 19" LCD and a Dell XPS Laptop. I would like an L-Shaped desk so that I can put the LCD on one side and the Laptop on the other.

The problem I'm having is that most desks don't have enough leg room for me...horizontally or vertically. I am 6'3" and I like to have leg room. I like the glass top desks, but I think I'm going to have problems finding what I want in that category.

Drawers and shelves are not important. I can buy some desktop containers for my notepads, pens, etc.

This desk needs to be appealing to the eyes, as I will probably keep it for a while.

I looked on officemax.com, officedepot.com, ikea.com, and bestbuy.com. The only one that stood out was BB's glass-top desk.

Any suggestions/ideas?

you can always make your own desk, would be cheaper all you need is wood hammer nails, and somthing to cut the wood. and measure twice before cuting. i will be making my own desk soon L shap to lol

What's the best/sturdiest way to build this type of desk? If I had my way I would have a post in every corner except where my legs will go.

you will need a lil more suport i think so you can have more wight on the desk top itself

like haveing 2 small shelfs on the sides then the desk top on top i think would be good, doesnt have to be shelfs but using that as a example, then you could have plenty of room fo ryour legs, if you can go to the store and take a look at a desk thats close to what you want and see how they did it

Glass top desks are great. Especially if you frost the underside and run some CCFL's through them. :)

Anyway, I've made alot of desks, and the one I liked the most was made of metal and glass. I don't know what skills and tools you have, but if you can, try to find someone with a welding machine (preferably TIG or MIG). Get some stylized metals (you can find them at places like HomeDepot and Lowes, you know, the stuff for gates and beds and whatnot), some tempered glass, and make the desk. It takes a while, but you have a custom built desk.

As for wood, I'd go with a good quality hardwood. I'd stay away from woods like Pine, because they are difficult to work with (alot of resin, gunks up cutting blades).

If not a natural wood, try to find a good particle board. Not the stuff that falls apart and gives you splinters, but some good stuff. it has to be nice and solid and can't fall apart when you drill or cut. There's nothing worse than pre-drilling a hole for a screw, only to find that the wood is crumbling.

If you want a really nice look, and are working with wood, you could always do away with the nails entirely. Cut holes and fill them wih pegs. Takes a while to get everything together, but it looks really nice, and you don't have to worry about the screws/nails flexing the wood and becoming loose.

Or, you could order from BB or Staples or something. Staples has a pretty decent corner desk, called the Z-line Legacy, or some such.

::EDIT:: If you do build your own desk, I highly recommend doing some research if you're new to the whole self-built area. Alot of stupid mistakes can be avoided by getting some info before cutting. For instance, measure twice, cut once. And don't forget to take into account the cutting blade itself. It sucks when you make a perfect cut, only to find that you are now 1mm shorter than you should be. :)

If I could use a wielding machine I never would've made this post to begin with :p I could probably swing a wood desk ok, but that would take me a long time. I'm interested in just buying one for now.

Heheh, true.

Honestly, if you want to buy a desk, find one online that you can go and look at in the store. If you find one you like, that the store has on display, go down there and shake the hell out of it. I know for a fact that alot of Office Depots furniture isn't too good (I used to work there and sold the stuff, ugh). Some of it was ok, but there are much better places to go. Just don't trust pictures. Make sure you can get a hands on experience first. The last desk I bought looked solid, but when it arrived and got put together, it totally sucked ass. After about a week, the joints were loose and couldn't be tightened anymore. Sucked ass.

Oh, one more thing. Stay away from desks that use those damn quarter turn lock screws. You can't trust them, and after a short time, they'll loosen up and fall apart. Horrible things.

im shure if u got that glassed top desk and u didnt fit under it you could go to your local hardware shop and put risers under the legs go get some solid acyrlic tubes and add an led in each one use for risers and light em up

This is EXACTLY what I was looking for. Checking on prices now. The picture has 4 desks pushed together. I'm only interested in one :)

It comes as 3 seperate pieces and they have a steel beam support that allows you to remove the inner legs. Might workout nicely!

close, but the one in my pic is alot longer on both sides

shadowbraker, how is the airflow to your computer with that desk, my friend useto have cooling issues on his puter when he had 1. also i had a glass top desk (u know 1 with the steel supports and green tinted glass u can get at office max) they are very flimsy and tippy, very hard to level on a hard wood floor or tile floor, on carpet it was flimsy like it wanted to fall over when id bump it

holy shit i want that desk fubak, how much is it???

I'm trying to find out. Apparently, Office Max, Office Depot, and Best Buy can do custom orders for stuff like this. They may even have it in stock. I'll post the price when I find out.

It's fine with the computer on top. Even if you stuck it in the botttom shelf, the back is just corkboard so you could easy cut a few ventilation holes in it.

That's a lot like what I'm looking for. I wonder if it's sturdy enough to hold 2 19" CRTs, and 1 15" CRT.

If so I think I'd buy one too. :)

The price I got was $1,100 locally. Way too much for me. I'd pay up to $700, but not more than that.

HAH! OMFG, that is ridiculous. It's $30 worth of partical board and couple of $5 legs.

The business sector always gets raped when they buy office furniture though.

It has to be some high quality particle board, if it is particle board. Paying for design sucks ass.
